Jammed in 1st
Hey...
On the way to work this morning, as i pulled away at the orsett **** roundabout me gear stick got jammed in first, so pulled over and still could not get it out of gear, then it kinda poped out, i then tryed to run it though the gears while at side of road, would not go into 1st or 2nd, but 3rd, 4th, 5th were ok. As i got to work and parked up i could then get all gears, but also noticed that while engine off and not pressing clutch down i could still put the gear stick into all gears with ease! that cant be right?
would it be the selector fork? or some sort of linkage under the car?
Are selector forks easy to change? im quite handy with a spanner!!
Oh... Got 1999 uk turbo

Finally got the gearbox off, thought i would share the damage with you all.
What are the fubar cogs called?

Looks like that i had parts of those cog stuck behind 1st and 2nd selector fork which caused it to jam up.
But i did notice some wear on 1st 2nd selector fork and 5th selector fork, the wear is at the bottom of the curve on both forks its not mega wear, still could do with a change?

Its got a light weight fly wheel and BOV thats about it really which were on the car when i got it.
Been searching for places to get parts for a rebuild, have been pointed towards www.gear.tv. Also found a place called cogtec just waiting for them to get back to me.
It was a good thing i took off the gearbox to be honest, as i also found oil inside the turbo where it connects upto the intercooler, but i have a spare to put on, also found that the turbo gasket has been blowing and a small pin hole in the weld on the exhaust flange, but alll those are simple things to fix!

Its a nasty thing to happen to a near standard car, people do go on about these TY754's being able to take 400+lbs of torque, though I take it the gear oil has been changed at its regular service intervals etc?? And you were not too harsh on the box were you?
(also do you sit with your hand on the gear leaver when driving??)

Oil was changed about 2 months ago, and to be honest i did power shift it! coming off a roundabout when it happened, i try not to sit with me hand on the leaver but do soimetimes find i have done.
crikey thats some serious damage! must have made a horrendous noise when moving once all those teeth stripped off? was there any signs of bad times ahead in the gear oil when it was changed?

There were no signs of metal when i done an oil change! The box did seem ok tho abit sticky to get into 1st every now and then.
Yeah there was a bang then a grinding noise, then the revs shot way up!!
Just got a price from me local motor shop for new gears (3rd) which come as a kit,(which i was told) got quoted £660 my responce to that was wtf! £35 for a new nut (which is quite large) £9 for a washer! and £25 for another nut and washer on the other shaft.
Can i fit a wrx or sti gearbox? which one would i need? the box i have is 8X-TY752VN6AA

need to go for the same box again i think unless you wanna change the rear diff as well as i think the ratios need to match. TY54 may be ok but dont take my word for it...
Are you re building it yourself then? Iv just been doing a college course on strip/assess/rebuild on gearboxes this week, what they like to do?

I had planed to do the work me self, its not too bad to be honest. Was abit of a pain to remove selector forks, but the two shafts inside just pop out and the front diff just pulls off very easy. HAve to be carefull tho when removing selector forks as on the out side of the case there is 3 ten mm bolts with springs and ball bearings inside that need to come out. Not yet removed the gears from the spindles just want to wait untill i get the gears to replace them..
I thought i might need the same box again as mine has 4 bolt holes on bell housing, was reading somewhere that wrx n sti have more but not 100% on that.

Not sure yet gonna give them a try today, but at the bottom of the website it say that modified parts are not available separatley. As they sell uprated selector forks and 3rd gear. Its very annoying tho as all the places ive tried want the whole gearbox and they want to do the work gerrrr probable coz the gears dont cost f-all. Big conspiracy when comes to gearboxes! Still waiting on a place called transmission rebuild kits, they had lots listed but none were Subaru.
Just a matter of searching and im sure ill find what i need, gonna go try Thames Transmissions over in Canvey also.
