Some assistance please, this is driving me mad, pun intended

As stated, the clutch pedal keeps sticking after most gear changes. When I take my foot of the clutch it normally sticks about 2 thirds of the way up (with only the couple of inches at the top left to go).

The car still drives ok, normally a quick "tap" on the pedal with my foot releases it.

Went to local subaru dealer today (Lavender Hill), chap said if it gets worse will probably need new clutch. I've done 48K miles on a MY96 UK turbo, car hasn't been thrashed in my 2 years of ownership, is this normal?

Was hoping it might only need a bit of lubrication or something simple (did spray some WD40 on it recently to get rid of annoying squeek which worked), any other suggestions? If not, anyone know approximate cost of replacing the clutch?

All help/comments gratefully received.

Just a sugestion but try driving around without your car mats. It might be that it's catching on them.

Chris have the same thing on my98 STi..

The pedal only comes up a few inches but the drive is engaged and works fine / NO SLIP..

would love to know whats up with it... Hopeing its not time for a new clutch

clutch slave cylinder: either oil seal leaking fluid past piston and causing semi-hydraulic lock or oneway butterfly/reed valve sticking on piston, either way bet Ya £10 it's the slave cylinder...!

 

You may find bleeding the hydraulics will fix it.....it is however a sign that the clutch driven plate is getting a little thin.

Try & bleed first(a piece of ****)....if not then worry!

 

i had the same happen on my 97my, after a new clutch being fitted. I found it to be the spring on the clutch pedal return and a healthy dose of white grease cured this annoyinbg little teether

Last dealer said its not unusual. It realy spoils the drive.

 

I'm having this problem with my 95 WRX and i have been told that it is the clutch which is waring out. But my car is starting to slip when accelerating through the gears. I got a new standard clutch for around £150. If i wanted them to fit the clutch it was about £280.

P.s
one way to see if it is the clutch is by starting the car, putting it in 4th gear. If the car starts to pull & does not stall.
Then the clutch is starting to go, So i was told.

If you dont want to go down the new clutch route just yet, you can alter the lengh of the rod to the clutch master cyl.At the back of pedal where the clutch rod meets there is a 12mm lock nut,if you undo this then turn the rod as to lengthen it you will find the pedal returns higher.Hope this helps.

had this when just after buying my my95wrx changed the spring located under the intecooler and hasn't done it sinse

 

rutt my boy I think you've hit the nail on the head

I doubt it's the clutch as I've just had mine replaced (as it was slipping) and it still does it.

I had a look under the intercooler of mine and a mates and I don't have a spring. (I keep meaning to get one next time i'm in the dealers)

Before you go any further have a look and see if you've still got a spring!!!!

mashwrx - sorry haven't checked slave cylinder, complete novice so wont be doing anything myself (took me about an hour just to put on my clear side and front repeaters )

Thanks to everyone for replying, looks like the spring is the first thing to check, don't want to remove intercooler myself though, should I bother asking a subaru dealer to investigage or am I wasting my time?

 

Just had a "clutch release spring" fitted and it's fixed the sticking

For those of you with Engine code EJ20G (93-98) : ask your dealer for P/N 30546AA030

For those of you with Engine code EJ20E (97-98) : ask your dealer for P/N 30546AA050

Please do not go by the years posted as you can see they over lap!!

The spring connects between the clutch release arm and the bell housing
