Hi guys hope you are well.


The engine just stopped while driving down the road, i dont think there
was any kind of noise (it happened very quick).

The car isnt leaking anything no smells etc. The power just cut really quickly.
Havent done any fault finding as of yet as its late 23:12pm need to be up in 6 hrs.

When attempting to start it just makes a whirling noise i guess, almost as if the starter motor
has gone, excuse my ignorance but does the engine stop if the starter motor dies??

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

The only thing i know that was wrong with the car prior to this was that the phantom air/fuel guage was hovering around the "rich" section when i booted the car which i was advised was the lamdba sensor causing the problem.

Can the lambda sensor cause the engine to shut down and not restart?

Try an ECU reset see if any codes come up.
I had an issue where I was driving and died, it turned out to be the MAF sensor.
If MAF advise is not to drive it.
Where you booting it at all? As it might have been fuel cut by over boosting.
Starter motor only works by turning flywheel on start up, doesn't do anything else

No i wasnt booting it just normal driving.

Will have to check engine codes tomorrow after work. I will do a bit of research into checking engine codes, i have done it before but really cant remember. Under steering rack if i recall.

could just be flat battery alternator maybe gone

 

hi mus, would a flat battery due to the alternator cause the car just to stop suddenly like that?

I havent had any trouble starting the car prior to this.

did you get any oil lights or anything come up prior to this? and check where your radiator overflow is to see if any water has been shot out of there.

 

I had a very simular issue this was down to cambelt tensioner failing check the timing

 

if the alternator has gone then yes it's possible even while driving as the battery no lo ger charges. try and get a mate to jump start it let us know how you get on. but also before doing that just check you all your belts and fluids are ok.

It sounds to me like the timing belt has broke....

 

sounds like the cam belt has snapped!!!!

 

As above sounds like a broken belt If the car turns over but a lot faster than normal i dont think you have to look any further.If you take of the timing cover and the belts not snapped get someone to turn the engine over and see if the belts turning because sometimes they strip of the drive teeth not breaking the belt but still the same end result

 

Hi all.

I got my friend to listen to the noise over the phone, he reckons it sounds like the Cam belt has gone.

On my own here so can't check if belt is minus it's teeth.

Does the Cam belt snapping always result in major damage?
Or am I dreaming, and it's just a case of re timing and replacing the cam belt?

The car is a 99' classic turbo ppp.

Not major damage but more than likely bent valves so heads of unless your blessed,you can fit a new belt and turn over the engine by hand and feel for compression on each of the cylinders but its usually wishfull thinking but you could be one of the lucky ones best of luck

 

Not a Scoob, but when the cam belt went on my lad's Clio MkII, everyone said it was doomed.

I stripped the head off and found two bent valves and one piston with a slight mark that I polished out.

Cost me £120 for belt kit and gaskets, fluids etc and away he went, a bit wiser, (no more, "bouncing it off the rev-limiter").

You might be lucky, but heads off a scoob is usually engine out..........

Oh actually I live in Coulsdon Surrey (near Croydon) does anyone recommend someone to look at it and fix it as required?

 

Tbh i dont know as ive never used a garage but just to do a head gasket would prob be 4 to 500 and theres 2,so prob over a grand, if its that it might be cheaper to change the engine by the time you pay for parts and someone to do it theres not usually any good news if the belts gone but dont reach for the drink untill you know for sure
