I know subaru stopped giving "version" designations to their STi's a while back...but i would like to know what mine is classed as...i thought it was an sti 8 but have seen on jap performance parts a slightly earlier car described as a STi 9...confused. Mine is a 2005 (05) STi type uk ppp...with dccd etc. thanks.

Blob-eye = V8 upto 2005
Blob-eye after 2004 where the rear arches got widened and DCCD was added (?) = V 8 B
Hawkeye = V 9
Hatch = V 10
Saloon = V 11

The trouble is that the markets are different, and as are the cars, a UK 2003 car is totally different from a JDM 2003 car (example the GL had a-dccd, quick rack steering, rear wiper, different diffs, different engine, different gearbox), so you just refer to the model year and the market, or you will end up ordering the wrong parts

Basically only jap cars are v1 v2 v3 v4 and so on. The uk cars are my 99 my00 my 01 my 02 up the way. So if you have a jap car its version and a uk car is a my.

It might shorten the name of the car, but it also technically gives it the wrong name. If you're going to use a number, the only one that follows the original convention (i.e. the one used for motorsport homologation) and makes accurate, actual sense is the one Tony quoted above (i.e. where 08MY = 14). Unfortunately that is the one that hardly anyone knows or uses.

As you've seen, because different people interpret these imaginary systems different ways, it's all too easy to get confused. Some people would describe your 2005MY car as a "9" (on the basis that bugeye = 7, narrow track blob = 8, wide track blob = 9). Then you have other people who lump all blobs in as one number and so yours would be an 8 You see where the confusion comes in.

You could call your car an Impreza v265.7241 if you wanted. It would make just as much sense as calling it an STi 8. Or 9.

As has been said the best approach with the newages is to stick with the model, model year and market, that way everyone knows what you have and there is minimal opportunity for confusion. Yes, it takes longer to say, but when you're ordering parts, it'll potentially save you a lot of dicking about.
