Have a look at http://www.scoobymods.com or http://www.i-club.com. They cover pretty much every thing possible
Chilton do one (try amazon) covering all subarus upto 1996 which is pretty good on the basics, esp for body work suspension etc... - It don't change that much
- Very helpful
, I don't know if there is a later version.

Twinny,
I also have a MY99 Impreza (Type-R) and I have been searching for a workshop manual for about 9 months now. I have had no luck whatsoever, it really is the holy grail of workshop manuals. I've seen a website that sells complete sets of manuals for about £750, a bit OTT I think. If you do have any luck then let us know.
Happy hunting,
Craig.

I don't think I'm really qualified to answer that, I have a MY97 and most of the basic engine layout, ancillaries, interior trim etc are easily interpreted from the Chilton manual. Things like wiring diagrams may be more tricky but at least you get an idea as to what to look for. Also note that this manual applies to US spec vehicles from Justy to SVX, but basically the bits look familiar and show the Subaru way of doing things. Can't remember how much it cost now, £20 ish rings a bell
Cheers
