Anybody know what causes the "check engine" light on the dash come on?

Lots of different things....

Take it to the dealer pronto if it stays on and probably worth taking to the dealer anyway as they can look at the history to see if there has been a problem.

Yeah, it's when the engine wants checking. Someone asked this very question yonks ago and tons of info is floating about. Try a search on this forum.

But get it "checked" like the handbook says.

 

The check engine light is put on by the ECU if it detcts a fault with one of the 10(ish) sensors connected to it. The sensor may be broken or giving a false reading. Most of the time the ECU will use a default setting so the car can still be driven, and this may result in less efficient running, tho you may notice no diffrence.

The solution is to get the car checked on Select Monitor (Subaru's computer) This will show the fault code and thus what is wrong.

The check engine light is intended to show a fault you wouldn't notice. Lets face it, you don't need a light to tell you the engine just cut out and won't restart!!

I'm not looking for work, but you should have your ECU reset to clear the fault code. If you have another problem the air flow fault will still be in memory and could complicate future problem solving.
