What are the risks of buying an sti with a blown headgasket? Could it be hiding any other problems, could the car be driven, slowly to a destination for it to be repaired?

 

All depends on price,model and if you are doing it yourself etc,if its a classic and its £500,then yes,worth the punt,even £800 - £1000 depending on mods.
Above that for a classic with head gasket failure,nope, could be lucky but then again maybe not and other issues might be there,big ends,turbo etc

 

I wouldn't buy any car with a blown head gasket and would get rid of one I owned if a head gasket went unless I could trace the underlying fault.
So many times people replace head gaskets thinking that they are solving a problem rather than just fixing a symptom of something more serious.

 

Its an sti6 for 2.5k.

 

Owner must be skint or hedging his bets on it being more expensive than a simple HG. Cooked engine, failing cooling system... there are so many tidy cars about unless it's a financial exercise to fix yourself and sell on, it wouldn't appeal to me.

 

Get him down to £1800 and if its local enough,go for it,if you are doing the work yourself and know about engines etc,check it out before buying,to see if anything else is at fault etc,sniff test maybe if you have one.

 

Im guessing he wont be and doesnt know engines as hes asking this sort of question.

If it proves to be a lemon what would the parts be worth as scrap? Could be worth a chance at £1800.

 

Your right, I can only do the basic mechanical work, I wouldnt attempt at changing the headgasket let alone identifying the root of the problem. I'm a sucker for yellow sti6's.

I've seen some sti6's around 4k but most are silver. I like white or yellow.
