Default Unhappy at 6,000 RPM

Last time I took her on the track she wasn't happy at about 5.5k rpm (refused to rev higher) which was very frustrating. Thought was the ill fitting bung up the exhaust so took it out. Checked the coil packs and they're good...

Drives great on the road but don't really need to use the rev range round the country lanes as the demand isn't really there. Tonight however I wanted to see if it was better without the bung in, in preparation for Monday's track day... and it just seemed a bit coughy spluttery at about 6,000 rpm... It went up a little further but wasn't really that happy. Not too sure what it is but it does affect the car for track use obviously.

Any advice appreciated.

Hiya Becca,

What model/year/mods does your car have?

Tony

Hi Tony, 1995 WRX Import. Vortex Afterburner. Full decat system. Quite a few performance improvements under the bonnet which I will check through paperwork to see what is relevant now. Thanks :-)

Seems to have uprated fuel and oil pump as well. The Vortex Afterburner is downpipe, centre and back...

Would the Mass Air or Fuel Ratio throw up an engine management light and be diagnosed on the machine? Ticks over fine...

I have no lights on the dash only symptom is the spluttering at 6k

mass air flow doesnt allways show any cel codes, it just starts missbehaving. usually an air/fuel ratio does throw a cel code up

ah ok thanks for the low down. I know cars can have similar faults but I am fairly new to owning a Scooby so it's nice to get the info from people who know their weak points from greater experience. I know they suffer with oil leaks and gearboxes and mine is really starting to whine more even noticed it in 3rd.

if hook up a fault code reader that does live data see what the o2 sensor i reading

also check those coil pack ends again you get cracks in the tips from the heat and they can break down at higher temps and engine load on track

good luck
