Unhappy Help! Knocking from engine. Newage WRX.

Coming down an NSL dual carriageway last night my 54reg 73000mile WRX developed a knocking sound which got progressively worse. The engine was making normal boost and power. The knocking seemed to happen worse on overrun whilst moving. Looking again this morning, it happens with the clutch in (so it's not gearbox) and at idle. It is related to engine speed and is a high clanking sound not a low banging noise.

The car was serviced 3000 miles ago and there is plenty of oil in it. It's standard, power wise. The car's had pretty heavy use over the last month (3000 miles) and I've covered 1000 miles since Monday driving back to the UK from Norway.

Any ideas what it might be? I'm based near Cambridge so I'd like a garage recommendation other than the local dealer who is extremely expensive.

Cheers!

Sounds like the bit between your clutch and gearbox has shattered, a ball bearing type bit. Sorry not much help with the actual names.

But the experiences you have described - is exactly what was happening with my WRX and in the end I bought a new gearbox and clutch as the gearbox was on its way out and it was all rosy again.

Send a PM to FiestaBoy on here, he is based in High Wycombe and highly recommended.

Worse luck, it's a big end bearing

The dealer is going to look more carefully tomorrow and prepare a quote. Does anybody know what I can expect? What are my alternative options?

*gulp*

By time you pay main stealer prices you could get a stroker bottom end built, much more reliable, able to handle more power but you will need a bigger turbo

Sounds good. Can you recommend anybody to speak to about this?

P.S. "Wherever I park my car, that's my home" - like the quote!

There's plenty of people about who can do this, Alan Jeffery, Scoobyclinic, but as nks said Fiestaboy (Rich of FB Tuning) is a good bet, he has been known to travel as well so if the car is a non-runner he may help. Duncan is local to you so he may be able to point you in the direction of someone closer to home.

Beware though, it is a slippery slope this modding lark

Rubinho - speak to Tim - www.sub-bus.co.uk

He will come out to you, remove engine and rebuild it for you using a choice of components based on your budget (then reinstall). Top bloke (ex Zen) and local to us too.

Cost wise - you tell him what you have to play with and the options will all be honest and straightforward (and VERY competitive).
