Octane Boosters
Does anyone have any experience with octane boosters?
Makers claim up to 10% increase in octane rating when a bottle is added to a full tank (50-60litres)

From: 1600cc's of twin scroll fun :)
Most increase by about 2 ron from 95 ron, millers for example (millers octane plus), NF i more concentrated formula in which you use a couple of capfulls to a tank, but they do work
What are you after or are you in need of upping the octane rating due to the fuel out in Botswana??

Thanks for prompt reply. Unleaded fuel over here is 93 octane, except arround Johannesburg where 95 is available. I have a 1997 STI (Japanese home market model) so presumably need to boost the fuel octane rating. Wynns and Redex brands available here.

There are a lot of guys in Botswana running NF Octane Booster. The highest available fuel there is 93 RON. Guys run a bottle of NF Sport which ups the octane to 98 and use a full bottle of NF Race days on the track.

@ Octane :Sorry for going off topic but how does such a small amount of nf raise the ron compared to people using 5 litres methanol per tank why do they need to use that amount?

Ok, just kidding in the last post. The ingredients in NF (and most good octane boosters) are anti-knock agents. By preventing knock, they effectively increase the octane of the petrol.

Sorry to jump in .....So which is a good brand to get and readily avialable from the likes of Halfords and such
I only ever use V Power but i'd like to add some to be a bit safer, now my car is running decent power
Thanks
Bernie

I think Halford's only sell the cheap stuff that will give you 1 or maybe 2 octane from a full bottle.
Roger Clark Motorsport is the distributor for NF in the UK. You can contact them to find out where to get.

NF is meant to be the best and most tuners here will tel you the same, here is an independent test - http://www.fueltechexperts.com/2008/...which-is-best/

I guess the lab technician forgot to compensate for the higher octane by advancing the timing (like a Subaru ECU would do).
On my car we tuned the car on 95 pump unleaded (the highest available here in S.A.) and got 196wkw. We then added a bottle of NF Race and filled up and retuned, and managed to up the power to 209wkw.
It's like buying a 500 quid pair of running shoes. It won't make you run faster just because you put them on, but it gives you a better ability (with some training)

Following on from the Octane Booster debate, My STi (Japan import) went in to have the 180kph speed limiter removed. Whilst being dyno tested a big end failed. Due to the speed/rev limiter, the car had never been over 180kph. A Subaru agent in Johannesburg reckons this is due to low octane fuel. I dont buy this as i ran a 1993 WRX for 80,000 km (130000-210000) on 93/95 octane with no problems. Seems it was over-reved on the dyno. Any other ideas?
STi's run higher boost than WRX's and as far as i know more aggressive timing maps. JDM models also expect 100RON fuel as that is what is available in Japan. Maybe this is why your WRX was ok. It could also possibly have been tuned for lower fuels.
I don't think the car would be over-reved on the dyno as it has a rev limiter... no different to being driven on the road. Not knowing the full facts though, this is only an opinion. The only person who would know the full facts would be the tuner.
