Default VF48 tell me all about it! ive just bought one cheap

hi all

just got a VF48 off ebay thanks to a member on here for £280

done approx 15k miles

bargain! i must say dont think i can get another standard bug sti turbo for that much

anyways current mods:

standard bug sti turbo.. think its a VF35?
3" turbo back exhaust
panel filter
walbro fuel pump
ngk pfr 7b plugs

remapped to approx 320/330 bhp i'd say

what would i make with this turbo and just another remap?

any other mods/supporting mods i should do to get a nice performance increase?

i'm wanting between 370-400bhp.

is that possible?

anyone used/got experience with the turbo? ive spoken to a few people via pm, just wondering if there are any other users of the 48? ive heard its similar to a md321h?

cheers

Eddy

the turbo is fine mate, my friend just got his twin scroll mapped from duncan to an estimated 340bhp.

mine which id say is 320ish .. has no problem staying with him up to 100 (havnt tried anymore, will se eon track at end of month)

turbo is spot on, given me good drag times too only done 6k after remap, last 80k miles have been at standard 265bhp

I thought the VF48 was the 2008 2.5 STi turbo........ good for 320 BHP plus on a 2 litre bug and akin to a VF35 or front entry TD05 16G.

should be interesting to see, 380 in torque is good enuff, (maybe duncan meant torque, cnt remember) as long as it drives better on the road, ill be happy, didnt cost much

might just see what i can get with just the turbo fitted plus remap and not do anything else

i dont think front mount is needed on the newage stis for road cars.. ported headers sound like a good shout, maybe even a turbo blanket to reduce spool time..

hope full boost isnt too late

I think 360 bhp/390 ft.lb from a 2.5 is proven...

ok cool will be interesting, should be better than the current turbo, suppose not many have used it on the 2.0, we'll wait and see

i wont be going any further with performance after this, will be focusing on handling now

just a quick bump up, collected the turbo yesterday, guy was spot on

kinda hard to read the model /part numb er as it's etched into the turbo, looks like it said VF43 but under a magnifying class it defo said VF48, so im dead happy i got it cheap with no delivery cost.

anyways he's got another VF48 coming off a hatchback STi in the next week or so, if anyones interested, i can pass you his contact details and you can discuss price/deal with him?

he said he should have a few more over the next few months too.

cheers

Just a quick note - is he getting them cheap because they are coming off failed Hatchback STi engines, I bought one from another member on here knowing it had come off a failed Hatchback STi engine.

I sent it away for testing and it did need an overhaul - balancing, new seals, impellor shaft and blades plus some other bits and pieces, it was then benchtested for 1hr of constant abuse and then sent back to me.

It was not a cheap turbo in the end (£580) but at least I would rather spend the extra £'s on overhauling the turbo rather than the £K's required to repair/renew the engine.

Just something to bear in mind when buying any second hand turbocharger.

he says none have come off failed engines..

how would i know if it has come off a failed engine though?

Check the impellor blades for pitting, try and spin the shaft it should move with a little bit of resistance but should definitely not be tight or have to be forced to turn.

you wouldnt. but if he works for subaru then they like to waste money and just replace everything. even if its just a cracked piston.

Mr D: let me know how you get on with fitting yours

to everyone that pm'd me , i'll pm you details as soon as i get home

the blades spin fine..and they move a bit..

what do you mean by pitting? the side that the downpipe goes onto does have a bit of flakeyness , it might just be nothing though

here are some pics if they help. does it look fine, got me a little worried now

p.s. the little bit of water is off my hands

o n mr d: he did say he knew someone that worked for subaru and could get me more parts if needed and he'd look after me.

The turbo looks fine, the blades are in good condition, when I mentioned 'pitting' you would see it on the compressor wheel side where foreign matter/debris had been impacting the blades plus you might also see chunks of the impellor blades missing.
