Looks a bit overkill to me bud. Theres a Firefox plug in called Adblock Plus (http://adblockplus.org/en/) I installed it a few weeks ago and haven't seen an ad since

Just installed adblock plus for firefox............ no changes Is there something I need to do in the "filters" section ?

Yeah you need to subscribe to a filter list..

Click on the little arrow next to the ABP icon
Click preferences
Click filters -> Add filter subscription
Click EasyList then Subscribe

Block Flash. Stops the majority of ads and makes browsing much faster. I use Click to Flash.

Does this allow you to enable flash in selected areas: Youtube video window, for example?

Im guessing that thisll be a Mac application, so it will be ideal. My older Mac is really struggling with all of the flsh thats littering sites now. Thank you.

It's a Firefox application GC, but Firefox is cross platform, so can be applied to any OS.

a custom host file is a really good trick, I have been using one for years -- a word of caution -- a large host file can slow Windows 2000/XP as it will parse the file on startup of the browser
