anyone gone from a uk to jdm sti
Has anyone gone from a classic or newage uk sti to a jdm sti and find that they are missing something.
not sure if it is just the sound that makes then feel or come across like they are missing that ora or flat four burble.
if so can you recommend a back box or system that brings it back, or is there no hope due to the headers.
i have a t25 with a full miltek system and it just dont fell right compared to my p1
cheers

From the initial test drive of a UK 2002 STI when they were first introduced over here, I missed nothing then buying a JDM STI, if anything it is a far better car, im not bothered about the sound, yes the burble is nice, but so is the screaming rally car that the twin scroll JDM STI's are
and they feel much more precise on the road, better turn in and more feedback (that quick rack steering probably has something to do with that though
)
Given the option, its new age JDM over pretty much everything else (including my type R
)

thanks tony, i agree the car itself is absolutely bloddy fantastic. its sharp steering is far better than any other impreza i have driven. just it seems to be missing something and all i can out my hand on is the exhaust note so was wondering if there was anything i could do to get that back other than going back to a larger single scroll setup as this would keep all the feel of the wheel and give me bakc the sound / ora that i am missing.
how easy and what parts would i need i assume headers, downpipe and turbo but is there anything else

Steve, tbh the sound grows on you
you just need to give it some time
but you wont feel jealous of all those other burbling scoobs out there, yours will just be much nicer

It's a choice of performance vs. noise. I know what I wanted when I chose JDM

Maybe you can find someone with a UK car to swap sumps, headers, up-pipe, turbo and downpipe with you Steve? Seems a shame after all the effort Iain went to to create the T25, but each to their own
Alternatively, buy a set of unequal-length headers - they should fit - and get a custom up-pipe made...Tracktive can probably help and may have one already?

I owned a STiV (had the burble) then a Spec C (didn't burble). Much prefered the Spec C & indeed really liked the sound of it as the revs maxed out. To me it sounded like a race car

PS
The wife could hear both cars from streets away so always knew when to put a cuppa on

the miltek is a very 'civilised' exhaust system, its discrete for day to day use and is good for passing noise tests on track days, mine was 94db's at 4500rpm standing at castle combe this summer. i had a full decat with no resonator on my UK 99 and although it sounded awesome to everyone outside the car it became a nuisance on a daily driving basis. i do miss the burble in my JDM Spec C, but i would happily sacrifice it for being able to rev to 8000rpm. I think the sound on the JDM newage cars is more akin to a super bike as it is quite highly strung and on the edge with the gearing.
Stevie, perhaps you need to let loose on the throttle a bit more at high rpm with the windows down, either that or you are missing some of the UK's 'lounge' comforts.

i would do steve but i bought a litchfield type 25 and if i did that i might as well of bought a std jdm, and with the money it would cost to change it over that would go very nicely onto the t25 and i doubt i would be able to call it slow after that
ive got a vortex on my jdm blob.....it still sounds like a motorbike,,,lol
i like it tho, when you give it full welly, its got a distinctive rasp.......dont think anything will give you that flat four grumble......pros and cons eh....

Steve - bottom line: you will not get the burble with equal length headers. You can change the exhaust tone, and dB level, by changing exhaust systems but you will never get the burble.
If it's burble you want, you've got the wrong model
.
Ive gone from a sti blob to a hawkeye jdm, without a shadow of a doubt for me the jdm is better
I was in exactly the same boat as you are, i went from a rumbling monster to a quiet kitten in comparison (so i thought) but when u open the taps its the mutts, my turning point was when i said to my mate get in it and drive it and ill watch ya (industrial estate late at night) im smiling now thinking of it
also its kinda neighbour friendly and u dont have people gawping at u from miles away cus they cant hear u coming

Milltek only has one silencer AFAIK - there's a resonator in the centre section, but the only silencer is the rear box.

.I also own a MY96 Sti Wagon with a cat 3" system which is the everyday car. Of course I love the burble sound and the pulsing through the seat, but when the back window is wound down both cars sound amazing, and different. I hadn't thought I like or miss the other until these type of threads here.
The JDM sounds more free on full tilt. It's more of a racing car sound and matches the performance of the car, racing through the gears

Most of the other scoob's I've heard have that splattery fuel dumping roar - equally nice
I have rather indulgently, previously owned a MY52 UK Sti PPP, MY98 V-Ltd Sti, V4 Type R and a UK MY00 Turbo 2000
