Seat Leon 20vT - Fast?
#1
Have any of you guys been in this car, are they quick in a straight line?
Reason being - caught up with one yesterday evening. He then got a good 5 second head start on me as we pulled away from a T junction. I caught him up at around 60-80, but after that there was not much in it. I then backed off as we approached license loosing speed....

Tim,
I test drove one before I bought the Scoob. Quite quick, certainly quicker than the Golf 1.8T, but just as characterless.
Wouldn't have thought they would have been in the same league as a Scoob, certainly didn't feel as quick. Reaction to test drive of the Scoob was 'Oh my God this is quick'. After 2 minutes in the Seat, I was admiring the switch gear and the quality of the stitching on the upholstery - dull!
Might get one when I'm older though
Cheers

I test drove one when changing my company car.
I'd prefer one to a 1.8T Golf - definately quicker, though uninvolving (didn't bother testing the Golf, though I have been in one). Excellent for that price range - only thing I can think of that is in that price range (new) would be the Skoda Octavia RS 1.8T.
Didn't feel as quick as my Saab 9000 2.3T (220BHP) in a straight line though. Saab probably weighs about 3 tons more too!

Well I was ultimately unimpressed when I test drove one, saleswomen was telling me how quick it was... All I was thinking was how dull and slow it felt
I really did want to like it, but really didn't.

Lead an Evo meet where a Leon boy with a claimed 225 bhp said he'd give me a fright. As soon as we National Limit he was behind me and I pulled away like his handbrake was up, the difference being even more apparent in the twisties. So the answer to the question is no, a jap import classic shape Scoob is in an entirely different league than an fwd rebadged V-dub.

Not a true drivers car, but quick, smooth, audi A3 dash, matches VW quality, loads of kit for 15k, insurance/fuel costs reasonable, subtle looks less of a vandal/thief magnet....
Worth considering once you've grown up a bit......

As I said, I backed off before the speed got silly. Plus this was on a country lane and things were getting v.bumpy!
I just have a MY01 WRX

I drive a company car and have a choice of driving either a P1 or a Leon Cupra (we have got both at work and 1 is always spare)
I seem to have adopted the Leon as my everyday car mainly because it gives a more comfortable ride, gives far better fuel economy (22mpg for the P1 V's 32 for the Leon) is quieter on the motorways and offers better creature comforts,
I agree that the P1 is slightly quicker (not as much as you would think though) and definatly handles better, but on a recent track day it wasnt very far behind the scoobys and i think the P1 owners were suprised at not being able to get round the Leons on the 1 mile straight!!
At a traffic light shootout the P1 absolutely kills the Leon because of its 4wd, but from 60-150 there is very little in it
I still take the P1 out every now and then just for the smile factor but i'm afraid that the Leon won me over for my everyday car!

The main reson they are so quick is that power at the wheels is 191Bhp, the 6 speed cable change VW gearbox that they use s incredibly efficient!(only a 9%loss), compare that to the 80bhp losses of a 280bhp P1 and you'll find that the power being put down on the tarmac is only 9bhp lower, thats why there isnt much difference between them once the leon has stopped wheelspinning!

The T/C on the leons is pants!!, if it detects the wheels spinning too much, all it does it to kill the throttle response for 1-2 seconds, then if you've still got your foot down it wheelspins again and kills the power again!!, it makes for very slow progress!!
The first thing i do when i get into my car is to turn it off

I think it is because of the amount of power it is being asked to cope with, it wasnt designed to have that much, the resolution of the system doesnt seem to be good enough, some people have fitted racelogic tcs and it works wonderfully!

Congratulations. That is the biggest pile of steaming shyte I have ever read in my whole life. Ever. Your reasoning behind transmission loss is not only dumbfounding but an embarassment to VW enthusiasts. Do some research before posting drivel like that gain, there's a good lad.

Go and look at my 2 independant separate dyno plots that prove it if you want, there online for all to see!, what is it that you are questioning? that the loss is so low? or that you think i'm lying?
#22
RR Dynos don't mean jack - who did them?
What I'm objecting to is that you've mixed up transmission loss because of gearbox efficiency and loss through a 4WD system.
And while we're at it - get a calculator.

Well i apologise if i have mixed them up, everyone has to learn sometime, what is it that i have mixed up then?, i thought that when the RR's did the overrun test, this showed up the total losses through the gearbox and transmission?, what does it show then?,
And why is it not right to compare cars by their actual wheel Bhp output?, it is my understanding that this shows a better measure of a cars on the road potential because the more power you are putting down at the wheels, is the actual figure that determines how fast you can go??
Surely if you had 2 cars with identical engine Bhp outputs of say 150Bhp, but one car lost 15Bhp through the transmission and the other car lost 35Bhp, then surely the car with the lower transmission losses is going to be faster??, or have i got something fundamentally wrong in my understanding of this??

Please explain to me as well MRK. I'm at a bit of a loss as to what you are saying in the everso delicate way. I believe Mosser has a point about comparing the at the wheels figures for real life performance on the road rather than the headline grabbing peak power and torque figures. I am loosing 12% on mine according to PE, but my peak figures aren't that good, 223bhp and 248lb/ft, so I would be biased wouldn't I.

Gary MkIV ~ we all know:-
a. You are the worldwide authority on all VAG products
b. You like to be confrontational
Don't personally think it was called for here ~ and since you're not well known on this site maybe you could provide some facts to enlighten folks?
