MY99 with mod the same as MY02 STI?
Probably a stupid obvious question but I'll ask anyway
I have a MY99 with no mods but happy to start modding it soon (warranty is about out). I had a test drive in the new MY02 STI Type UK and was completely wowed by it. The handling was incredible but I don't even drive anywhere near the limits of my MY99. However, I loved the increase in mid range acceleration (50-70).
Paying around £13k for a trade-up is a bit steep when I could pay a lot less in modifying the current car.
If I put my BHP up to around 260 would the pickup and acceleration feel around the same as it did in the STi? Would putting the bhp up give the torgue increases I would also need - are there different mods that increase torque?
I would love the new model but can't justify the cost this now.
Does anyone who has upgraded their cars and have test drove the new STI comment on comparative performance?
Many thanks
Richard.

Mate,
Haven't driven the new STi so can't answer the question, but what I would advise is that running on optimax, getting a decent backbox and sticking in an ITG filter will make a massive (i.e. noticable) difference. I also have an MY99 and did these 'mods' over the past week or so and it has made a massive difference!
Goodluck anyway!

Richard,
I have a 266bhp 257lb/ft MY99 and have driven the STi.
My car has a full decat exhaust, ITG filter and Dawes Manual boost controller. Those figures above were running just over 15Psi, but the dawes is now set to about 16 I think. (those mods cost about 430 quid for the lot)
I test drove the STi and thought wow this car is fantastic. Then after the drive, got back into mine and I have to say it didn't feel that much different at all - well, not enough to make me buy the STi over my car.
Bearing in mind though that a similar mod - eg decat exhaust - on the STi would make it around 300bhp. I would like to try a 300bhp STi as I feel that would be where the real difference is against my car.
Hope that helps!
Cheers
Neil.

Cheers guys.
Good to hear that the difference isn't really there - as £400 quid is a bit different from £13k
I know there's more to it than just accleration but given how I use my car (nothing risky, just nice to have the kick for overtaking) then the mods might be the best route to go.

Richard,
If you want a comparison, pop along to the SIDC trackday at Knockhill this Sunday. I've got a modded MY00 that's *hopefully* got around 250~260bhp which I'm happy to take you out in so you can get a feel for what it feels like in comparison with an STI Type UK.
Just look for the blue Scoob which looks a bit like this
and has this smilie
on the screen

Scotsman,
Have a PPP and DEP on my MY00. I test drove a STI the other weekend, and found it not laggy but definitely lazy below 4000, whereas the PPP on mine increases mid range torque and power and makes it much more easy to drive quickly (still within the appropriate limits of course).
The lasting impression after getting back into mine afterwards was that there was very little difference in handling (I didn't push the STI as I was only in it for about 25 mins - I did encounter the much talked about initial oversteer but did not push through it), ride - though the STI felt better damped (the DEP was a good investment in my view), or acceleration (if anything mine felt slightly quicker). However the new car is much less flattering and will not make up for any driving deficiencies you may or may not have, it is harder to drive quickly - thus all the recent guff on the bbs about "lag". It is also much nicer to sit in than mine, although I didn't feel so connected - that may well come with time.
I appreciate you may not want to spend your hard earned on the Prodrive mods at such a late stage in your warranty especially when you can spend as little as is mentioned above, but the performance perspective seemed to me something you might find useful.
Cheers

Thanks Tang,
I'm severly tempted by the PPP - it does seem to give me all the benefits I'm looking for. Just the cost this now
I 'might' just try a Dawes this now and then take the leap with the PPP later on. I'm going to head over to the AWD open day on the 30th of this month - which will be great as I need to get my knowledge level up a lot more.
Thanks again for the response.
