on the motorway today,upto speed,crazy steering wheel wobble and alot of cabin vibration,sun visors rattling etc,WTF,so pull over, no puncture,wheel nuts all tight,hmmm,back upto speed,still like it at 60-70-80 then after 10 minutes, perfect again for the whole journey,arrived at place,drove around etc, drove back home, all fine, at all speeds.

jack her up,took a look,no visual signs of anything amis

missus takes it work just now, phones me up,done the same thing this time even at 30mph,she only has a 10 mile journey so not too bad

weird huh ?

any ideas,i 1st thought wheel balance but why go fine again for hrs then do it again, i also thought maybe the tyre rubber as the motorway journey was from cold,clutching at straws really,but the tyres/air is hot right now so why do it again

hmm,im hoping thats a long shot possibility,from what i can see,there isnt a front diff as such,but its within the gearbox and a seperate rear diff

so if it were the front diff,it would be a gearbox repair/replacement jobby.

as said,im hping thats a shot in the dark offer as im hoping it isnt that

still weird tho,as theres no noises or anything,wondering if theres any bushes i can check/replace 1st ?

 

Wheel balancing costs 40 quid if you have the tyre removed and inside of the wheels checked. 40 quid well spent if it finds the fault fixed afterwards!

clutch slipping maybe?? or starting to wear??? this will happen once in a while. and will cause this to happen

well,i have rotated the rear wheels to the front and it didnt do the problem for 5 days,then today,after not being used for a day,it does it ??????

so its not tyres,as the problem is exactly the same as when the other tyres/wheels were on the front

so ???

it doesnt matter if you engage the clutch whilst in 5th at 60 etc,still does it and theres no vibrations at idle or while revving the engine

you can select 4th gear whilst crusing from being in 5th and it still does it

 

have you had any front drive shaft oil seals done in the past as they need to be done correctly as its not just a case of unscrewing the oil seal covers and tightening them up they need to be wound off the same turns as they are wound back in.?? plus all profiles of tyers are the same size and power stearing fluidis well topped up?

 

I'd hazard a guess @ a diff problem. Army ****** Landrovers are always showing them problems and its the diff.

 

had same sort of problem and it turned out to be stripped splines at end of prop. happened straight after clutch change to

 

no driveshaft work done lately,power steering fluid is as it should be as well.

with the severity of the vibration im looking at prop shaft,just trying to find out if there would be any symptoms whilst staionary as dont want to swap parts i dont need to

 

wouldnt be anything while stationary as the prop only moves when moving. same for the diff's.

 

oh,i didnt see the replies on page 2

ive been informed if it were the diff it would clunk/cause hopping at low speed which it doesnt,but weirder things can happen i guess

with the prop,this sounds daft,but does it still spin round when the cars moving but not in gear ? or if the clutch was pressed in,as when the vibration/cabin vibrates even if put into neutral or clutch engaged it still does it,the steering wheel is vibrating like mad,the cabin is shuddering,sun visors hit the roof etc its that bad,the missus feet were vibrating whilst she sat in the pasenger side etc

 

it will turn when the wheels are turning. as you have no control over the diffs with your car so when you are rolling it will turn. when you stop it will stop. thats the way i believe it is

 

cool,so if it is the prop it makes sense it still does it in neutral but while moving still/coasting.

trying to find out if its an easy enough job to do,im guessing easiest way is to remove the rear diff for the access to slide the prop out the box,unless the prop is in 2 halves,unbolt from the rear diff/centre part then slide the front half of diff out from the gearbox ?

i hate not having a ramp grrr ha ha

Sorry it was my front drive shaft. guessing this had to be removed when the box came out to do the clutch.

will only do it when driving. but mine was doing it constantly so not sure

 

if youve had a recent cluch done (gear box off) cheak and see if the pins are in at the end if inner cv joints to stub shaft in to box, if there not there or not in properly may be they will move and vibrate or partialy come out and catching against something
you dont need to remove rear diff to get prop off its a 10 min job on a pit or even axle stands, a bit f oil may come ut too from rear of box

 

cheers,will check,but i think the are there as i just had the car jacked up and think i remeber seeing them,but will double check

as for the propshaft,it seemed fine,well,to the un-experienced eye anyway,i got a long solid screwdriver and pried it into the joints to see for movement,none i could get,the only movement i did get was on the mounting bracket,the rubberised thingy bit,i could push the prop up and down very easily and even the bracket that bolts to the chassis was moving,its rubber bushes were moving too,where the bolts go thru,dont know if this is normal movement tho ???

think if that centre mount has excesive play in it it defo will vibrate for sure..
its like when a engine mont is broke the engine shakes like buggery and bangs wen you let clutch out

i tried getting some footage but only having 2 hands and the car only inches away from my nose made it pretty hard to do ha ha

put it this way,when i gave it not much effort, i could see on the bracket where the bolt goes thru the rubber bush,i could see where the paint had worn off from where the bolt/bush sit it moved that much

 

well am going to put my money on this with odds of 2 to 1f
