Default My First Scooby (MY 05 Sti)

Hi Guys, I've been posting on here for a while now pickin up nuggets of info here an there.

I've eventually purchased after about 15 years of dreaming about subaru's since I was about 10!

Picked up a genuine irish 05 sti, only 19,500 miles on the clock with 4 services in the book.
What a car, i love it! I was always a diesel man till now and its some change! (unfortunately at the pumps too, best i've managed is 25 mpg at a constant 65mph on a 140 mile drive! is that normal??)

Have a de-cat downpipe ordered and will have it re-mapped, although dealer did say unless you go fitting extra power upgrades from day one they generally cause trouble after wards, thought he was spoofing myself
Anyone agree with him?

Here she is anyway.

hello and welcome, ide suggest a remap if your going to de-cat the down pipe..this will ensure the engines/turbo safety plus you'll gain more power/torque from the map.

ide say your mpg is about right to be honnest, alot less than 25mpg if you drive like a loon though.

other than that enjoy your sti mate.

pics dnt work btw

No i will defo do the remap an D/cat at the same time.

I thought on a very steady long run i should see about 30.
If the drive is "spirited" at all thats dropping to 15-20mpg.

Also, this one does have the DCCD.
If you come into a corner in anyway fast and lift off, it suddenly starts to turn sharper into the bend like 5-8 degrees, then if you lean on the throttle again, it'll drift wide the same amount again.

I know if you come in hot an lift off it unweights the back end and can cause over steer, but the car feels far from breaking traction, but just turns in alot more.

Is this a DCCD trait?

dont think you'll see 30mpg in a subaru mate..25mpg might be about right.

as for the dccd i cant help you as ive never owned one with this fitted..someone will be along im sure who can answer that..

does it have uprated anti roll bars.. ie whiteline adjustable...this could be why its more responsive when cornering

Suddenly lifting off going into a corner you load up the front suspension increasing front end grip, this can help but be wary of the rear end coming round on you. Trail braking has a similar affect.

This sounds like driving dynamics rather than anything to do with the DCCD.

I wouldn't concern yourself with mpg, it'll never be good. I've had anywhere between 70-400 miles from a tank in my remapped 05 STi

Ye i knew about the lift off thing, but I've never experienced anything like it in another car, M3, golf gti, legacy B4 etc.

It's a completely standard car as far as i know.
I haven't had it up on a ramp yet though to look under it. Maybe this weekend to do downpipe, fingers X'd.

What fuel has it been run on - being down south I presume good old unleaded and not super.

If its really bog standard you'll probably get away with it, but be wary.
If you do replace the downpipe then also be very aware of boost spikes until its remapped.
Get someone from the over the water to remap it, Andy Forrest and the likes - Don't use locals!

It's been run on 95 octane.
Just put some 98 in it this tank (4th in 4 days! lol)
So will see how it goes on that.

Ehm, i've a good friend that runs chippedire.com.
He's mapped a few legacy's and sti's before with good results and is a complete wizard with VAG and bmw diesels and turbo petrols.
He had my 120d puttin out 218bhp and just over 400lb-ft! And it did that safely for 2.5 years.

We'll I believe its a wee bit more complicated mapping subaru's in comparison to other marques.

I know that Andy Forrest comes to Northern Ireland reasonably often via Scubbay, and JollyGreenMonster also comes over quite a lot.
SIDC I believe bring Bob Rawle over.

Its your car so up to you, however if it was mine I wouldn't be giving it to any locals

Right, have you any insight into why you wouldn't, or have you had a bad experience with someone?
Not asking you to name an shame, just curious.

Just noticed this one, holy smokes that's some going, 70 miles on a tank!
Was that on track? If that was on the road your doing well to still have a licence i'd say

400miles seems impressive. Think i managed about 280 at best so far. Still it's early days an not de-cat'd or mapped, so that will most likely help on long steady runs.

Mostly because the locals really don't know what they're doing.
OK, there are some exceptions.

I think you need to ask yourself why do:-

Why do the idsc.ie bring over Bob Rawle
Why do scoobyireland use JGM
Why do scoobynet Ireland use Andy Forrest

There are probably only a couple of people in the North.
1 has a good reputation, but remaps seperate ECU's only - i.e No Ecutek
The other - we'll they bring over another tuner from the UK (Pat Herborn I think)

Right, fair enough.

I think i'd trust this guy.
He seems to know what he's at, and has already done some B4's and sti's.
I've been in 1 of each after they've been done, and they drove very well.

But I suppose longevity is the true earner for a good reputation.

What are they doing?
Remapping the standard ECU
Piggyback job
Aftermarket ECU

When you get the work done, be sure to come back with an update on what you've achieved.

Good luck anyway.

I'll let you know how it goes.
It'll be re-mapping the standard ecu and fitting de-cat.

Well i'll be fitting the de-cat in his garage, then as soon as its off the ramps, a re-map, along with some data logging.
I presume the data logging is taking a log of AFR's an boost pressures etc while driving so he knows what to change and under what load, rpm etc.

Another Question for all of you guys.
If you had 500 quid to spend on a completely standard 05 sti what would you do?
Assuming there's good pads, tires already on it, and the de-cat an re-map are done

Cheers guys!
