my94 legacy auto , button next to gear lever ? what is it ?

If it's the little plastic button to the front left ( if I remember correctly ) of the gear shift, then if you press it in you can move the gear stick without the ignition being on and the brake pedal being pressed. Just make sure that the handbrake is on !
