Found this while taking a peek at my ECU today..... its wired into it .

that looks like one of those £6 jobbies off ebay that trick the ecu in to thinking its getting more air so it bungs more fuel in. get rid of it, its probably making your car go slower and more likely to go bang

 

it is off ebay.
however i took mine off and it didnt run right for 2 weeks,
maybe i should have done a ecu reset.
exact whati had om a scooby i had years ago

when you remove it make sure bat is disconected first,
and then do a reset, trust me

 

Steady. Before you go cutting into the loom you need to work out for certain what this thing is doing and how it has been connected. If you simply cut it out and insulate the loose wires you might be fine, but you could also end up with anything from a check engine light to a car that won't run properly, or won't even start.

It's difficult to work out exactly what it is given that your pic is out of focus and we can't see what wires on the ECU loom it's connected to. Can you post us up some more pictures? Would be handy to know what type and model year your car is too. Oh - and on the device, what numbers are marked on the integrated circuit?

That was my first thought, hence my comment. However it's just a guess on my part and could be wrong. The trouble is - even if it is one of those things, it could have been fitted and since then the ECU re-mapped with it in place which if the case may mean it has to stay or be re-mapped again if removed.

 

Surely even the eBay shysters wouldn't sell a bare, uninsulated piece of veroboard like that?

Exactly why a little bit of caution is needed prior to getting rid. Mike, if you can't post pics, can you at least tell us what numbers are on the integrated circuit (the little chip with eight legs) on that PCB? I'm guessing that the three pin transistor-shaped thing to the upper left by the red wire will have the number 7805 (or possibly LM317) on it somewhere, but if you can tell us it'll give us more chance of working out what it is.

 

my guess is its a fuel cut defender as its only got 3 wires, what pins is it wired too.

Ok I figured out how to post a pic lol. The markings on the square blue thing with a screw that I assume means its an adjustable pot of some sort is...BOURNS 3296
And the marking on the thing that "looks" like some kind of chip is....M71DL...LM...358N[IMG][/IMG]

 

Well spotted Mike, that blue box is a multi-turn pot, and the LM358 is a two channel op-amp. Reinforces the suspicion that this is a fuel cut defender, but there are still other potential explanations. The key will be to see how it is connected to the loom.

 

I cant find a pin out diagram of the ECU that I,m confidant is the correct model year etc

IF its a fuel defender what does it do please ?

 

ok I found a ECU pinout diagram...... its wired to No.1 injector, the wastegate actuator and a power feed from the ECU

 

Hi Mike, on the right road mate. FCD's are nasty if that's what it is, fuel cuts for a reason IMHO

 

Are you sure the pinout diagram you're using is correct for your model year and type of car? (Or, if it is, make 100% certain you haven't got the pin numbering the wrong way round).

The connections to the ECU power and wastegate actuator (boost control solenoid) would make sense if it was a boost clamp, but that wouldn't necessarily tie in with it being connected to the injector supply. Curiouser and curiouser...

 

Oh - to answer your earlier question, FCDs are a way of getting round the safety overboost fuel cut built into the ECU. You'd normally see one if some sort of external boost controller had been fitted and the fitter had increased the boost near to or beyond the factory fuel cut limit.

As 53 says, they're not really the best things on the planet. However, bear in mind that, at this point, we're not really any the wiser about what that thing actually is. Given what you've told us so far, it doesn't sound like an FCD.

 

I can only go by the pinout diagram that I could find.... BUT..... I,m thinking remove it and see what happens ,
