Default most common reason for bad start up when cold??

hi i have a version 3 wrx 97 when its cold it goes to start then dies (most of the time) when its warm it starts fine. ive been told crank sensor or coolant sensor are the most likely causes. if it was a crank sensor surely it would not crank at all? or is that not the case?? I have alreadyhad it at a garage once and it decided to start and they decided to tell me there was absolutely nothing wrong with my car as he said no error coeds came up... please somebody advise me as its starting to p*ss me off now.

Cheers
Lee
