I think I have bought the wrong oil, can you confirm?
I have got a 2006 2.5 STI.
I got 0w 40 castrol edge sport, is this wrong?

 

Yup, not recommended, it will give you a list of suitable oils in your handbook, are you after a fully synthetic or semi synthetic oil?

I went on the castrol web site and it told me to use this oil, guess they have it wrong?

The car is standard and I dont drive it very hard.

 

Well castrol suck you can either go fully synth or stick with the 10W40 semi synth.
Motul do a nice 10w40 fully synth, or yu can go for a 5W30 (though personally I wouldn't want to on a new age).

I am gutted now, wasted £40 on oil I carnt use because castrol have it wrong!!!!!

40 is fine, the 0w is the 'winter' rating, when it warms it will be 40 weight, take it easy until oil is up to temp. although unless it is really cold, the difference between 0w, 5w & 10w etc is much less. in summary, the W rating is the cold flow weight, the second number is operating temp weight.

 

I understand the ratings etc, but is it safe being 0w? I never push the car until the water temp is at least just under half way.

 

No chance of taking it back and swapping it?

I got it off ebay etc, trying to ask if I can but I am guessing its a no. If its not to be used, I will just have to loose the money I guess.

 

oil takes a lot longer to warm than the water, i.e. my WATER temp reads halfway at 60deg, and stays halfway until the temp is 85ish. which takes about 4miles, oil takes a lot longer to reach temp, only after this do i start using boost properly, 0w will be ok as long as you take it easy when cold, i wouldn't lose sleep over it tbh. it's not like you've put paraffin in your engine.

 

Would you say its safe to use? I have to drive slow through town at the begining of my journey, usually about 3 or 4 mile. I am guessing that during that time, the temp of the oil should be warm enough to be ok that it was 0w? Or would you say bite the bullet and get different oil?

 

For the sake of £40 and the fact you're driving a stressed engine, it's a no brainer to be honest.

Now if you were driving some cheap daily runaround, it may be different.

I'd stick it for sale at £30 in the For Sale section and buy the right oil this time. Not rocket science to look in your handbook and see what it recommends mate

 

You can Mix Oils of different grades & even Mineral with Synthetic Etc .. But i would only Mix the same types personally...

So you could buy another Gallon of thicker stuff, Mix half & half & get two oil changes out of it ..

I do believe from memory that Magnatec was not best recommended for the flat4 ....

It was something to do with the Magnetec side & it sticking to places that were not desirible. I would do a search & see what you can turn up...

But like you say, That may have been for modded engines Etc.

0w-40 Edge Sport in a standard new age car is fine for normal use (i.e road driving, not track days, heavy towing, or regularly treating the roads like autobahns ).

It is a synthetic oil (PAO group IV and also alleges to have some ester added) and a much better oil than Magnatec 10w-40. It meets all the viscosity and APi/SAE/ACEA requirements given by Subaru (Inccidentally, the requiements set out by VW, Merc and BMW for their longlife oils are far more demanding than anything set out by Subaru, which Edge Sport also meets).

Point to note: Magnatec 10w40 is the same hot temp viscosity as 0w40 (as gallois said) BUT is semi-synthetic, and therfore not as durable or as good quality. Its ok for six month oil changes, but I would prefer to use something better (such as Edge Sport) for 12month change intevals.

 

The 'W' stands for Winter; not weight.

Manufacturers frequently recommend what suits them to sell you, not what suits the car. Look on Mobils site and youll see them pimping 0W synthetic for a Porsche 924S! A worse oil youd struggle to find, for this car. That needs a 15w or maybe a 20w oil and synthetic oils will cause endless problems. They know that punters will lap up their rubbish advice though; as 'its a Porsche'.

 

Good advice just put it back on EBay you never know you might even make a bit on it
Look in your manual mate and you will find that Subaru recommend 5w-30, But if you want a little more 5w-40 if your going to be pushing the car a little harder
Go to Opie oils site there give you the best advice and very good prices

Mobile 1 15w50 is a nice oil or the 10w40 semi synth would be my choice

How do these sound:

Castrol Edge TD 5W-40 advanced synthetic engine oil
Mobil Synt S 5W-40 Superior performance synthetic engine oil
CASTROL GTX 10W-40 A3/B3

 

The 5w40 mobile if they have it, there is also the 15w50 motorsport.
