Wrong car, right car - BBC2

Anyone see this
The guy said his priorities were performance, handling and practicality...and he chooses a Merc C280 Estate over a Scooby wagon!
Made me laugh when the second hand car dealer said that Scooby drivers push their cars hard...how could he say such a thing?

Not a bad program - apart from his choice at the end. Wouldn't consider the Audi - thought it was too middle-of-road, boring etc and ends up with a Merc estate! - hand me the pipe and slippers
Did think it was funny Barlow calling that bloke a cockney monkey - he looked like an extra from ******
Best quote of the night though - "tell the guy its got a bidet - rear wash wipe"

I think also his wife would have stopped his 'special favours' if he had bought the Skoda!.

Yeah but 2 grand for that ropey old 924 in maroon wasnt bad, youve got to remember that Scoobs are a bit full on for a lot of normal punters, besides his opinion was the Scoob was not as quick as he thought it would be and the merc was quicker than he thought it would be, probably not as much in it in a straight line as you might imagine !
Still gets on my t*ts, the badge snobbery thing though, his missus turning her nose up at the Skoda ! Why, cos it's not a F*ckin BMW, at least he new the score.
It was however, as Mercs go, quite nice.

Thought the guy selling the "Porker" contradicted himself by choosing the Merc. Said he wanted a fast drivers car that was practical. Forget badge snobbery and the clear winner for that money was the Skoda or Honda Civic Type R (I am talking about a new car here because of the warranty etc and the fact its "new"). Depends whether you want a saloon or hatch really and whether you would finance a secondhand car over 4 years. Can't believe he thought the 5 dr scoob wasn't "fast" though. Did he leave the handbrake on or something ?

so - the "performance car fanatic" with a ropey 924 reckons that:
a boxster is a *real* drivers car
a scoob is 'slow'
a merc estate is 'really fast' (but needs a set of alloys?!)
Sorry Hammy, you is truly one clueless dork
(see my thread in Muppets for running commentary on the prog) I love shouting at the TV

To be fair he didn't say what you lot are implying. Unless I wasn't listening properly, he said the Scooby is not as fast as the thought it would be, and that the Merc was faster than he thought it would be. He didn't say the scoob was slow and the merc fast, just that he expected the scoob to have more punch and the merc not to be as quick as it was.
He made the decision that he felt best for him (I suspect that having driven the merc, his requirements changed somewhat, i.e. he liked the smoothness and comfort etc. more than performance/handling).
Personally, I would have got a TVR or Lotus or something mad, and got the wife an old reliable tank(omega/mondeo etc.) to transport the kid(s).
Mind you, he could get himself, his wife, 2 kids and prams in my VR6 Corrado, but I aint selling it!!
[editied coz i don't know how to do smilies properly! ].

See your point but,
a boxster is a *real* drivers car : Every review I have read says that a Boxster drives like nothing else on earth, Porsche know what they are doing, They just look a bit effeminate !
a scoob is 'slow' : I think a standard UK car doenst live up to all the hype, I mean 208 bhp is fine, but doesnt get you the kind of acceleration he was perhaps expecting based on aforementioned hype. A standard uk car has comparable in gear acceleration to my T5 which I would say is quick-ish but I have driven a 911 Turbo and been on a GSXR 1100 as a passenger, the 911 was plain mental but the bike left me a gibbering wreck (too quick and scary to enjoy, just wanted it to stop)
a merc estate is 'really fast' (but needs a set of alloys?!)
It did seem to move quite well, as I said, perhaps not that much in it in a straight line and it looked like a C180 (i.e. painfully slow), why it needed alloys I dont know.
Sorry Hammy, you is truly one clueless dork : I must say, I have seen much more objectionable characters on this kind of programme.

Actually, as stated at the beginning of the program, they asked the dealers if they could use the camera's. They just didn't tell them about the earpieces.

Actually, the Merc is fast cos it's an automatic. Cars with automatic tend to have very good mid-range acceleration as the gearbox kicks-down automatically when the throttle is floored.

Thats how I bought my scooby.....
Went to buy a harrier jump jet test flew it and it wasn't as fast off the mark as I thought it would be.
Then test drove a Scooby and it was quicker then expected.
So I bought it.

This is quite common now - 5 years ago when nobody had heard of the Impreza Turbo there were no expectations and everybody who drove them were amazed. Now there is alot known about them and everybody knows they are one of the 'fastest' cars around. So, they expect 911 turbo quick - which a standard Uk car cannot give. Just a perception thing nowadays.

Was waiting with baited breath as the chap's requirments to me sounded just like a scooby wagon, volia, one wagon turns up.
Kinda obvious he'd go the merc route, if the merc had not been put in I reckon he'd have gone for the scoob.
As for the comment buy the car dealer about scoobs being treated hard by their owners. Well, some of us, yes, but not all of us, and to be honest I'd say that most Wagon owners are a pretty restrained bunch, with a few exceptions of course (not mentioning any names )
Pretty good program though, makes a change.
Was expecting the car dealer to start quoting lines from Lock Stock though! did like the 'cockney monkey' jibe from Barlow, bout the only thing this guy has said that's made me laff, oh, and the Macca F1 remark!
