Just getting back on track and after selling the VW on Sat, I am in a position to look realistically at the scooby situation.
I have two little ones, 3 and 18 months, and looking at anything from a classic to a newer (2004/5) wrx or sti.
Just after some general advice and input form the people who know all about scoobys

Don't get a P1 with a Blitz Nur spec, it will make their ears bleed and they will trample all over the seats to get in the back (speaking from experience)

You picked a good time to buy - there are plenty of them out there!

If you're buying new age then you can pick up a bargain, although one thing I've heard from people is that the bug and early blob models had an issue with the rear struts knocking a lot (especially on the STI there's a thread on here somewhere) and having to be replaced.
In fact, when I recently had Prodrive springs fitted I found one of my rear shocks had failed. Something to bear in mind.

 

There's a lovely looking dark blue mica classic for sale, funnily enough in the for sale section. 1 owner & 48k miles only, for 4 grand, I already have a scoob & can't really justify having 2, but if I could this one looks lovely.

I have seem the blue one, and it is really nice, one half of my head tells me that would be perfect as it is something we originally talked about having, and then the other half is remembering the sti we went to look at yesterday.

The sti, I felt was overpriced, and the front seats were manky as hell, so we are still looking.

 

id say try get a late classic as everything just about is cheaper to upgrade (assuming it wont stay standard) personally id go for the sti too a little more money but worth it

I am just trying to stay sensible, not really into modding classic stuff, but who knows?

The sti from yesterday was in good nick on the outside, but was in a bit of a mess on the inside.... nothing that the dyson and some elbow greese couldn't handle, if it were pretty bad i'd get it valeted.

 

It depends on your budget, personally if you can stretch to a JDM new age blob (03-05 though an 05 is preferable) then go for one of those over the uk car, more goodies and an absolute delight to drive forget the classics, i have one and even though i love it (its my second one) my blob was a far better car in everyway (and i still miss her )
The JDM new age will also be pushing over 300bhp out of the box, you can get a nice uk fuel remap (they can run ok on uk super unleaded with a slight loss of power) and with a bit of tweaking they are good for a nice 360bhp plus you get the better gearbox (stronger) better engines (stronger) better car (stronger though heavier, and im just waiting for the classic owners to say "a 280bhp classic will leave it standing" which it wont, it will more than happily keep up and out handle one )

look for the slight flare on the rear arches, shows its an 05 model car, a bit superior in the handling department over the earlier cars, a slight reduction in understeer, making the car more neutral due to the improved Spec C geometry, these cars had the A-DCCD from 2003 (Auto-drivers controlled centre differential) basically a nice electronic gadget that makes your handling better (it has a manual mode also )
The 2005 cars have an improved version with better electronic input due to more sensors.
Lots of goodies, electric folding mirrors etc, no subaru burble, but trust me they sound better a real rally monster and a pussycat to drive around town in (oh and notice the much better brakes over the classics )

Depending on your budget, I'll get a nice classic type r/p1...they're not too expensive and looks the b*llocks
But then again, you need a 4 door for the kids, maybe a sti7 or jdm

Thanks guys, I have just posted about running a jdm as was a bit worried about the octane levels not being high enough in the uk fuel.

If looking at a re map then that might have to reflect the price, but if I could get away with it for a bit without the car being spoiled then I could afford to go to about £8500.

Not really fussed on the age, but my other half is not a fan of the bug eye, so 2003 onwards would be better.

 

im sure there is a 2003 blob wrx 78k on clock £4800 he wants.

JDM's will be a little more expensive than a uk car but in the current climate you may still get some bargains
Not sure about this one, its cheap for an 05 car, you need to see if these cars have full service history, they have 6 monthly, 7.5k services (not 1yr 10k miles like the uk cars) and the gearbox oil on the dccd cars is changed annually so slightly more expensive to service (but having one over a uk car really does make up for it )

You will need to do alot of hunting around for a good one though
Oh and running a full decat without a remap on a new age STI is a BIG so avoid as it can lead to serious engine damage (well it will lead to serious engine damage).

The black one is nice, the mileage is under average, but still lower than some others I have looked at.
To be honest I had been averaging about 3k miles a year in my VW, as I have the use of a company car, so I am also open to cars with slightly higher mileage as I know that the miles I put on will be minimal.

I was on the trader and pistonheads last night, plenty of nice examples.... I am without a car at the moment, but not rushing into buying anything.

There's more bargains on the bug eye and blob eye, not so much on the hawk eye (I've just been doing a lot of searching). There's a Subaru Dealer that has an 04 STi with something like 45k miles on the clock listed at £9995. Pretty good I think as you'll get 12 months warranty. Should be able to knock a few hundred off the price as well.

As for the rear struts, I had mine replaced 3 times in 4 years :-/ I had a 2004 Blob eye STi

 

I am not bothered hawkeye/bug eye..... but the other half is not keen, personally if the price is right I am sure I can persuade him with my feminine charm!
That is a great price for an 04, but still a little more than we can pay out.

 

Yeah I work with a guy who has an 05 WRX PPP, and he had both his rear struts replaced under warranty.

 

Bugeye Prodrive style - if you can find one - are superb looking cars IMO. And I reckon they stand out more than a standard V7 STI or blob STI - just more unique I guess. Go on - persuade your other half - join us lol.

 

In a different direction, how about an STi Forester?
Good loading area for awkward kids bits, but STi owners would have a scare.
