They're about 230bhp I think. But tons of torque, something silly like 500

BHP is nothing without torque

( Fact: BHP=(torque x rpm)/5250, so for example, if torque@4000rpm is zero, we have BHP= (0*4000)/5250= 0 BHP ).

what year was is it? The newest 330d’s stock are 245bhp. Mine is a 52 plate its 187, then in 2004 they went to 204. I’d imagine that the car that did that to you would have been able to do that without a remap if it was one of the newer ones. But older than maybe a remap. What were you driving? Where abouts in west yorks. Im not sure if I want a Scooby now – people cant get enough of 330d’s at the moment!

Keep an eye out for this weeks 5th Gear repeats.

VBH tracked one and had a hoot chasing M3's and the like. Much to the disgust of some of some people on this board who seem to think that no diesel can be faster than a Scoob and she can't drive. See here https://www.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-...-diseasel.html

EDIT: or see here The Show - Fifth Gear for the actual clip

What difference does torque make to this contest, unless you were accelerating from 30 mph in 5th gear?

well, the 330d has less bhp than the scoob, and as the OP said, it flew past his scoob – so id say torque makes all the difference to this contest!

Indeed - the BMW may have less peak power, but if it's providing more power more of the time then it'll win.

I wouldn't be surprised to find BMW's figures a bit conservative too... I've had my 330D on the rollers and seen 5% more power and 10% more torque than the book figures, on a day when a number of scooby owners went home disappointed...

If both cars are revving at the point they create most horsepower, then the more powerful car should win (given similar weight etc.).

If both cars are revving at say 2000 revs, then the tourqier car should win.

Unless I am very much mistaken.

thats a bit of a simplistic view, and a bit naive and outdated - to think that a bmw 330d is only in a position to win at 2000 revs. things have moved past that and they pull throughout the rev range, yes not to 7000-odd because they dont rev that high - but by that point they've changed up and are pulling again.

Everything: In a lower gear like 2nd or 3rd that high torque is multiplied even more. (i.e 5th is 1:1, so ignoring the diff ratio for simplicity, 300lb/ft goes to the propshaft, if 2nd gear is 2.5:1, then that torque is multiplied to give 750lb/ft, well, not quite that much in the real world because no transmission is 100% efficient, but you get the idea).

The only negative aspect is that torque is over a 2000rpm useful power band compared to a typical scoob's 3000rpm useful power band.

Power is for show, torque is for go...

once you're rolling the torque of these big diesels will out drag much more than you'd expect.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't see how a 200bhp car leaves a 270bhp car for dead, because it's quite tourqey?

You should however look at 30-70 times through the gears.

I don't know the exact times for the 330, however I do know the 535 automatic is quicker 30-70 than an M5.

The combination of massive torque and great autobox makes the 3.0 and 3.5 BMWs very, very quick cars. On a longer straight the Scooby might have pulled ahead - but the BMW is great in the twisties and fantastic accelerating out of them.

I have a 335d, 290bhp and 421lb/ft torque. fantastic to drive on the motorways (where i spend a lot of time). There are NOT many production cars that i have come across on my travels that have out accelerated me on the motorways.

Or a tricked up wrx at about 330bhp ish and it would have been a diffrent story .my opinion alot (NOT ALL subarus in standard form are wa.nk......get over it mate or get modding.or get a spec c.............rb320............type.ra..r etc.cant believe i just sat and wrote all that LOL.Wright im of out to find a 330d bye ...

An RB320 is basically an STI with PPP engine wise.

My boss has an 06 plate 330d thats been chipped and that knocks out 280bhp and 578 NM of torque and it a flying machine , before i bought the Subaru i had a twin turbo Aristo and it would blow that away very easily.

I recently heard about a GB270 that when tested on the rollers was actually only 240bhp

When you look how 330D values have dropped, they're now good value. 03 plate with 70k in Autotrader at £5790.

Wouldn't always say subaru's don'y make book figures, friends 04 plate WRX at standard ran 252.2bhp on a team dynamic's RR. Torque is a key figure to be honest, Dept-manager at work has a new Skoda fabia VRS which has just been chipped and it's unreal once it's going...380 torque in such a small car at the moment and it will soon be pushing 260bhp/480torque once his miltek exhaust system is on and some more minor work has been done. Would leave my scoobie for dead after 1st gear

You need to drop a cog every now and then mate. I'm aware the Impreza is not the fastest car in the world as some on here think but a 350/350 STI should not be left standing by a loaded 535d.
