Is the above possible? I have a 3 year old Phillips 32 inch LCD HD TV, but it only has a DVI-I socket on the back, not HDMI. Also, there is an optical cable socket for sound I believe. Do I just get a DVI-I to component (3 wires on xbox connector) adaptor and then an optical sound cable?
Not sure how all this works!

The recommended way would be to use the VGA cable plus a VGA>DVI adapter. The VGA cable has an optical out socket on the plug that goes into the back of the 360.

Just don't use the red/white phono audio plugs if you're using optical.
The VGA cable has an optical out on the back of the plug, the same as the component cable:

It depends on whether the TV supports a DVI-A signal, works fine on mine, when I tested it. Of course its analogue.

Right, have tried this. Put the tv onto the 'hd' channel and all I get is a message saying 'no input signal'. How do I set the xbox ti hdmi when I can't view the menu?

Right. As above, I have a Philips LCD TV with a DVI-I port (no hdmi). I want to connect my xbox 360 to this tv. I have purchased the vga-xbox cable as well as the dvi-i to vga adaptor. I connected all of this last night, turned on the xbox and then set the tv to the 'hd' channel. The message 'no input signal received' it displayed on the screen.
In scart mode, if I change the settings on the xbox menu to hd 720, the screen just goes blank so I cannot confirm the changes, so it goes back scart.
I am not up on the new technology terms, so would appreciate it if anyone could tell what to do, step by step.
Thank you in advance.

Will see tonight if I can find the right setting on the tv to accept video through dvi-i.

Yes, if your TV doesn't have a channel for each input source, you'll need to check that it's expecting a signal on the DVI-I socket for the 'HD Channel' or whichever it can be set to.

No luck. I cannot find the menu on the philips tv (32PF7520D) to switch the video inputs. No where, not even the philips manual that I downloaded from there website offers any help. May have to bite the bullet and just buy a brand new 42 inch plasma!
Anyone else got any last tips before I start getting friendly with the flexible friend?

Yes, the menu comes up. You may have hit the nail on the head there as I have been selecting HD! So, should the tv show the xbox feed straight away or do I have to play around with the xbox hd settings?
It should show straight away, then you should be able to set the res. I think the Xbox just works with what ever cable is plugged in, where the PS3 needs to be told.

Right. Some success! I tried the hdmi-dvi cable on the pc channel and I had a nice clear picture. Then tried the vga cable through the dvi-vga adaptor piece with red/white phono leads connected for sound. No joy. No input signal message comes up. I'm thinking that I have a duff vga cable.
