Connecting xbox 360 through a dvi-i port.

Is the above possible? I have a 3 year old Phillips 32 inch LCD HD TV, but it only has a DVI-I socket on the back, not HDMI. Also, there is an optical cable socket for sound I believe. Do I just get a DVI-I to component (3 wires on xbox connector) adaptor and then an optical sound cable?

Not sure how all this works! :wonder:

The recommended way would be to use the VGA cable plus a VGA>DVI adapter. The VGA cable has an optical out socket on the plug that goes into the back of the 360.

Any pictures of the parts required? I'm not that up on all this digital talk! :D

One of these:

. . . and one of these (VGA female to DVI male):

You often get the adpaters bundled with graphics cards so may already have one?

Gear Head 05 February 2009 10:43 AM

Thanks for that, but where do I plug the red and white wires? Surely not the tv? As I'm then going from tv to tv!

DJ Dunk 05 February 2009 10:47 AM

Just don't use the red/white phono audio plugs if you're using optical.

The VGA cable has an optical out on the back of the plug, the same as the component cable:

Don't worry, I'm being an idiot. I understand now. :thumb:
Thanks for your help. Do I then just select HD on my tv and its job done?

DJ Dunk 05 February 2009 10:53 AM

Pretty much, just adjust the resolution settings on the 360 too and enjoy :)

Thanks matey! :thumb:

It depends on whether the TV supports a DVI-A signal, works fine on mine, when I tested it. Of course its analogue.

BTW, DVI-I = analogue & digital

What gender problem?

GC8 06 February 2009 08:47 PM

:D

DJ Dunk 06 February 2009 08:53 PM

No, the 360 VGA cable ends in a male end:

You're confusing me now too :D

GC8 06 February 2009 09:17 PM

So nly good for TFTs with a removable VGA cable then... :thumb:

DJ Dunk 06 February 2009 09:45 PM

Indeed . . . or TV's :D

Right, have tried this. Put the tv onto the 'hd' channel and all I get is a message saying 'no input signal'. How do I set the xbox ti hdmi when I can't view the menu?

GC8 11 February 2009 11:18 AM

Not the clearest of descriptions; but Id try configuring it using a VGA display.

Gear Head 11 February 2009 11:25 AM

Right. As above, I have a Philips LCD TV with a DVI-I port (no hdmi). I want to connect my xbox 360 to this tv. I have purchased the vga-xbox cable as well as the dvi-i to vga adaptor. I connected all of this last night, turned on the xbox and then set the tv to the 'hd' channel. The message 'no input signal received' it displayed on the screen.

In scart mode, if I change the settings on the xbox menu to hd 720, the screen just goes blank so I cannot confirm the changes, so it goes back scart.

I am not up on the new technology terms, so would appreciate it if anyone could tell what to do, step by step. :thumb:

Thank you in advance.

Will see tonight if I can find the right setting on the tv to accept video through dvi-i.

Yes, if your TV doesn't have a channel for each input source, you'll need to check that it's expecting a signal on the DVI-I socket for the 'HD Channel' or whichever it can be set to.

Gear Head 11 February 2009 06:52 PM

No luck. I cannot find the menu on the philips tv (32PF7520D) to switch the video inputs. No where, not even the philips manual that I downloaded from there website offers any help. May have to bite the bullet and just buy a brand new 42 inch plasma! :D

Anyone else got any last tips before I start getting friendly with the flexible friend?

Power Junkie 12 February 2009 10:22 AM

Daft question, So when you push the AV Button on the remote does the input menu come up? from there select PC, then it should work??

Yes, the menu comes up. You may have hit the nail on the head there as I have been selecting HD! So, should the tv show the xbox feed straight away or do I have to play around with the xbox hd settings?

Power Junkie 12 February 2009 10:43 AM

It should show straight away, then you should be able to set the res. I think the Xbox just works with what ever cable is plugged in, where the PS3 needs to be told.

Gear Head 12 February 2009 07:13 PM

Right. Some success! I tried the hdmi-dvi cable on the pc channel and I had a nice clear picture. Then tried the vga cable through the dvi-vga adaptor piece with red/white phono leads connected for sound. No joy. No input signal message comes up. I'm thinking that I have a duff vga cable.

Power Junkie 12 February 2009 08:05 PM

It sounds like the cable is duff, cant you use the Hdmi-Dvi? or cant you get the sound that way? "i dont know Xbox well"

Gear Head 12 February 2009 09:31 PM

No, dvi is only for video, not audio.
