Default CV joint for STI Type R

Hi

I might need to get a new front outer CV joint for my V5 Type R since I had to use some brute force to get the drive shaft off the wheel hub resulting in damaged threads for the hub nut Is the CV joint any different compared to a regular STI/WRX or GT model since the Type R has no ABS?

What is the part number in that case? It's impossible find the right bits at the Swedish dealers since they even can't find the JDM cars in their system but with the right part number it should be possible to order it.


And how do I get the CV joint off the drive shaft?

Hello.

To remove the CV joint you need to remove the 2 steel straps that hold the CV boot on the shaft and onto the CV joint, You should get 2 new ones and a new boot with your new CV joint.

You need a large punch (solid bit of steel bar) and a even larger hammer.
What you need to do it hit the spider looking part at the back of the CV joint as hard as you can, it may sound abit odd but when it comes apart you will see why.
The spider looking part it the bit that goes round your drive shaft.

It will take a few goes to get it off.

At the end of your drive shaft there is a C-clip which holds the CV joint onto your shaft, By hitting the spider part it should compress the C-clip at the end of the shaft and the CV should start to slide off.

I do have a brand new CV joint for a classic impreza but dont know if they are different for different models of classics.

Thanks it sure helps even if I'm not sure what the spider part is but I haven't cleaned off the old grease and don't have the shaft nearby either. But I will give it a try tomorrow if I can't repair the thread of the joint.

Is this spider part reusable or do I have to get a new one?

You will get a new one with the new CV joint.

Also you carnt get these from subaru only complete drive shafts.

I removed the CV joint today, it was actually quite easy.

However I'm not sure if my joint is the same as the one in your picture. The spider part looks a bit different? Don't know if it matters?




On the outside it looks similar though.

As long as it has the same amount of splines it will fit.

Does not matter if the spinder is different.

Right mine has 22 splines that mesh up witht he ones on your shaft and 27 that goes though your hub.

Does this sound right?

I count my splines to 30 and yours to 22 so I don't see how it would fit on my drive shaft. But thanks anyway.

Thats a bugger then.

The only other things i can surgest is to try and get the threads repaired and or keep an eye out on ebay and your subaru salvage companys.

just replace the whole shaft with one from a breakers or ebay.

If you are replacing the entire thing, you won't have a problem.

If you buy a second hand one make sure you get like for like ie, if yours is a left get a left and vice versa.

If you get them the wrong way round the shaft can snap.

I sourced one from my local "General Traffic", STi V5 Type R also.

The same part is used on a legacy or forester of a certain year.

If i can remember i will get the part number of it tonight, as i still have the box it came in.

By the way its been on the car for the last 12 months running 400+bhp so would seem its a good quality item!

Please do check. I was thinking of getting a second hand shaft of the breakers here in Sweden but the prices are a bit too high IMO for high milage shafts.
