Help please - Frozen Impreza
Right
My Impreza Sport was frozen this morning
Well my gf had it she started it an it was making a squeeling noise an she phoned me (car was running for under 1 min) i told her to turn it off.
I then nipped home from work to check the car
1 - The garage that did the thermostat an coolant change only filled the car with water so ALL pipes,radiator are frozen an also the water in these pipes etc
What damage could this of done. She said the temp gauge stayed on cold
Most important i went to crank the car over an it WONT start
Im assuming because its so frozen so im going to leave it until i get home at lunch an have a proper look.

The cam belt is housed behind the covers at the front of the engine so you won't be able to see it. If it has snapped which is possible I would go no further and let a garage/specialist take a look as you could end up doing even more damage.

When you mentioned that i thought. Hmm wonder is there another belt somewhere i havent seen lol
Yea as i said all belts are intact so there is hope yet.
Next thing is going to be defrosting the radiator. Whats the best way. Pour boiling water over it or.......
The car is at my house so i cant take it to teh barn as its 10 miles away

you gotta thaw the engine and pipes out slowly,,,, a fan heater aimed under the engine and radiator would be good i had the same thing happen to me years ago on a mark 3 2000e cortina had to leave it in the garage with a small parafin lamp under the engine to thaw it out took 2 days luckiny there was no damage take it slowly put it in a garage if you can and leave the bonnet down to keep the heat in but only put the heater on low, a slow thaw is the way to do it good luck

I cant get a heater out to it mate just where it is at my house.
Only thing i can think of is "warm" water an not boiling water
Thaw it out that way if its damaged im just going ahead with the turbo conversion as i have my brothers car at the mo

as advised by others. you NEED to 1st get in contact with garage. and then ask them what they wish you to do as you hold them responsible . you doing a sudden heat change could do more damage and they might say "hard luck". metal and seals etc do funny things when they change temp quickly

Cheers Luke. . To be honest they are really sound, I called them about 10mins ago an spoke to the owner (its a garage i have been using for years) they said to leave it until the afternoon an see if its thaw'd an then theyw ill send someone up when im up there at lunch.
I wast ratty with them on the phone but whats the point it wont get me anywhere. They pretty much said "our bad" which is cool

It would have taken everything for me not to have been down there at opening windmilling at their utter ineptitude.

I would also advise a total flush through as many pipes as you can off and shove the hose pipe where you can. As if the pump has broke up little parts may block the system up and you don't want that. I wouldn't go back to the garage IMHO unless you have to as doing it your self at least you know it would be done right! Pity you wasn't closer or I would lend a hand and donate some hard core Antifreeze!

I got the semi warm kettle out used it to warm the pipes up. Left it a while an all had turned back to water from what i could see.
My brother got off work an came round with some anti freeze from his work :-) refilled it an the car started first time an heated up to normal operating temp. Fan came on when it should
I moved the car as i want to see if i have any cracked pipes or anything.
How would i know if i had an air lock in the system

i changed the radiator on my old one, it had an air lock n i just squezzed the bottom hose, with the radiator cap off, to get out as much air as i could then topped it up with water/anti freeze.
i had to repeat this a couple of times after running the car.
just keep an eye on the temp.
don't know if this is the recomended way but it worked for me.
