When i move off nad find the biting point etc there is a glunk coming from the rear. This also happens when you let off the acelerator briefy to slow down and then go back on the gas.

Its most noticable when in traffic when your stopping and going all the time.

Could something be loose or is there a normal ammount of play in the diff like on some old tractors?

This is on a 98 type r if that makes any difference.

 

It could be something loose, more likely a diff mounting bush, the first ones to check are the mountings at either end of the 'T-bar' in front off the diff that bolt to the body just in front of the rear wheels inboard of the outer sill.

I have a similar sound with mine (same age/model). I have been informed it is simply the diff taking up the drive and is in fact nothing wrong.

Yes mate sure will. i got told similar when i first got mine but it seems to be getting worse..

Sounds like rear diff bushings for sure, I had the same exact sounds, from the rear, when gettin on or off the accel switched my bushes and no more sound oh and you cant tell by looking you will have to take the bushings out or just replace em

It solves the exact symptoms we speak of. I know these arent for the same year as your car is but these (for your year) should fix the problem

 

I have had what seems to be the same......a clunking sound from the back left of the car when changing gear.

I'll have to check my diff bushes too, recently shanged the diff too so it makes sense, unless it needs the bolts tightening.

 

I already have a sub frame lock kit so that wasn't the problem.

Do feel though

 

? loose drive shaft nut. Check staking is still in drive shaft groove. Just a possibility thats easy to check.
