normally the CEL will come on have a look here for a how to check/reset codes Scoobypedia | Trusted knowledge for everything Subaru | Scoobypedia / Scoobypedia (look under ECU).
Limp home mode is just to protect your engine.

Does the speedo work?

Is the engine light on??

If not could be MAF or sensor?!

Limp home mode is normally at 4k RPM???

only difficult bit is finding the fecking plugs to read the codes as if they've never been used before they are taped up and it's fecking awkward looking for them.

I reiterate what myblackwrx asked.... Does your speedo work???

The majority of the time it is this fault that causes these cars to go into limp home mode.
