Underseal Peeling off?????

Just washed my MY00 - DBM - Wagon - 8 months old - and guess what??? in the rear wheel arches it looked blue, so I took a closer look - underseal coming away in nice slim strips!!!!

Has anyone else had this?

Is it a warranty item - I will check my book but thoughts???

Should I just go out and give it a new coating - or will that invalidate any warranty?

Is the body check worth the £100?????

I have just looked through my booklet and I reckon I am covered for rust - but what about the underseal coming away?? do I have to pay to have it re-instated? surely as it was not applied correctly then Subaru should reapply it free???

Well yes - obviously those with Jap Imports needn't worry about underseal - what underseal? I hear you say!

Charles - I have just thought of a way to double the value of your jap import - sell it with a full tank of petrol (UNLEADED mind - you dont want to triple the value with SUL + Booster!!)

The "black stuff" comes straight off my arches everytime they re-apply it and withing a month! I think it's more cosmetic than anything else - if you look closely at what's underneath you'll see what I mean. Call me synical, but I think it's just applied to justify the 80 odd quid for the yearly corrosion inspection??

Waxoil needed, 20 quid for the gun and 11 quid for a rtin try it good stuff,

Do grey imports really not have underseal pete? Mine does, and I've had it since new (MY00) - and I know it's not a cr@p over-priced uk model, as the difference was clear on a rolling road.

The Grey imports are only undersealed around joins etc.
The uk spec has slightly more,but even this is ****! If you have a proper look underneath much of the floorpan is unprotected.Best thing to do,uk or `grey` is to waxoil the lot anyway.This way you can spray it inside the chassis sections underneath.
As for you Pete I thought you were conserned about the resale value!?
If so why a WAGON! Usually worth quite a bit less come sale time.

Subaru use waxoil fror their underbody treatment any way- it said as much on the invoice!! (he says still feeling ripped off )

If you are worried about maintaining the underseal, DIY is the cheap option (as Buddy says), the only thing is you dont have the advantage of having the appropriate bit of your service book stamped up.

I have to say though, it is pretty alarming when the OE underseal comes off in 4 inch long strips as soon as a hose is used.

15000/1yr service coming up this Saturday

Dealer says underbody treatment is a steam clean all over (under?) then application of Schultz (sp?), plus a stamp in the book. Said that Schultz is the only IM approved product.

Takes around 2hrs and costs about £65

Anyone know difference between Schultz and Waxoil??...I'm still undecided, mainly 'cos I've never seen (or heard of) a rusty Scoob and I'm sure they're not all treated

It was definitely waxoil- the unmistakable smell has persisted in my garage for the last 2/3 weeks. Applied by a main dealer too.

If you had a Mk2 Escort ( !!), you got to know the smell of waxoil

Thanks all - I seem to get a lot of stick these days!! ha ha ha keep it up!!

Wayne - I have a Wagon because its the one that will be worth the money in the practical 00's. OK, its cos I got a big dog and wife and kids and trailer tent and boat and all the stuff that makes an estate essential!!

Scooby Doc - ****, do you reckon mine was imported from Japan then?? I thought it was made in Luton!! anyway its OK cos its Blue (not Grey!!)

Moss - So? is the annual inspection worth it? why not spend the money on doing a re-seal every year DIY?

The bottom line appears to be:- Is the annual inspection a rip-off?? does the underseal that is applied by the dealers come off at the first decent wash?? does the scooby rust?? who doesnt have the annual inspection done?? are all the 'grey' imports rusty after 6 years??

Is it true that VW offers 12 years corrosion warranty - without inspections???

Surely at the services our cars have any gaps in the underseal should be picked up and highlighted anyway??

The underseal is a warranty item. I've had my dealer replace it several times. It always comes off again. They use this stuff on the wheelarches to protect against stone chips, and waxoyl on the rest of the underside where stonechips won't be as much of a problem. I've never seen a rusty scoob so it probably isn't a big problem

Just to point out, not all Jap imports arrive without underseal.

I took my STi III to the garage to have it done, to which they turned me away, pointing out the professional/factory? layer of underseal all over the underside.

Just checked this one...

Waxoyl is used to fill cavities (doors, bonnet, boot etc) - which stinks. And the black "Schultz" stuff in the arches and on floor - which doesn't stink.

If black spray on treatment falls off dealers should respray it at anytime, under warranty.

I've also worked out why it doesn't last! They take two hours or so to steam-clean/powerwash the underside and spray the treatment on... So, by my reckoning there is no way the under side of the car will be dry enough to take any paint reliably in that time.

Some of the underside of the Imports are undersealed but I don't think all...

When I bought mine I got the car undersealed as part of the price on the road. Just in case at re-sale time...

I get it checked out once a year to make sure no further sealing is needed...

Just a thought.
