Anyone got a pic of a DV fitted to a MY95 WRX? (or similar car)

I fitted mine today (Bailey), just want to make sure I have not f*cked it up! (stranger things have happened!)...

Here's a picture of my 95WRX with no dump valve



Give it another two years and I'll have a picture of a destroyed turbo by not having a dump valve fitted

 

If no-one puts 1 on, I'll take a piccie of ours. Blitz on a 94 WRX I'll put it on tonight!

I've had my car for over two years now and it was only a few months ago I saw a picture of a dump valve on a 94-95WRX on Scooby Net. I had a look on my 95WRX and found that the dump valve was missing and the pipework blocked off !!! After searching through the threads (search worked then !!) it seems that the re-circulating dump valve is only there to prolong the life of the turbo. By not having a dump valve I apparently enjoy a better throttle response but at a cost of putting enormous stress on the pipework and turbo when I lift off whilst on boost. This stress is caused by the air having nowhere to go but back through the turbo (eventually stalls it) and out of the air intake. Whether I have a modified turbo that has 360 bearings to endure the shock waves hitting it I don't know but it's survived for over 2 years now in my hands so I'm not about to change it. Having said that my turbo will probably disintegrate on the way home

I have a MY96 with SS DP+BB and blitz (with pipercross induction pipe). I get a REALLY loud sound when the wastegate dumps (sounds like an ashmatic old man with a cold) I was wondering if I would get a cleaner / crisper (quiter even) sound with a vent to air vavle rather than my standard recirc one?

I though that running without a wastegate was extreemly bad!??! do you know what boost ur running at??

Yep it is a Blitz cone. I think you do get a nice sound with the Forge, but I agree, the Blitz does give it a kind of asthmatic note on the standard DV. I may be changing my DV soon for a Turbosmart one. My bro has just bought one and I'm waiting to see what sound it makes first as it has a 2.5" trumpet!!! It's more like a backbox than a DV!

Hi,

It was a bit of a squeeze because of the ABS, the filter actually rests on it. Had to pull the pipework about a bit. Now got a high flow inlet pipe from Jap Innovations that replaces that big black box jobbie so the my filter now sits sideways and fits easily.

BOV (blow off valve) = DV = wastegate... can't really think of other aliases for the little beastie

they just realease excess boost pressure from the turbo..
plz feel free to correct as I'm pretty stupid

I was thinking of getting one too as mine does sound a bit silly, I'm going to see if I can record it.

I think that all the dump valve does is stop air being blasted back through the turbo knackering the bearings and destroying the pipes. It's simply Subaru's (and other manufacturers) attempt to prolong the life of the turbo by using a re-circulating DV that moves the air 'upstream' of the turbo.

i have a question for the D/V experts:
Is there a dump valve available that gives off the flutter sound you get from the WRC cars??
I had a bailey Atmos D/V fitted once for about a week, engine management didnt like it and it wasnt the noise i was after so i took it off.

I agree with you Muncher, but that air that gets blasted back will not only damage the bearings long term, but it will also slow down the turbo every time you lift off.

Agreed it will stall the turbo but there will still be more boost pressure available when doing quick gear changes than if you use a DV.

how on earth did u get the blitz on?!? my ABS was in the way... I went out n bought a Piper Cross Induction kit (2nd hand from here) so I could have the pipe bit.

I know this sounds sad but has anyone got the recorded sound of b4 & after...

would guess the plate is to stop warm air from the engine getting near the filter.

Now for a question, what advantages and disadvantages would I get from fitting a DV to the blackbeast (MY94 WRX Wagon - full decat exhaust and HKS 'green mushroom' induction kit)

overfulling? running lean?

just curious because after hearing Alex's (Dr Evil's) forge BOV (same thing as DV???) albeit on MY01 it sounded very cool.

I'm tempted.

Which one to go for?

That plate, as Markus rightly says is a home made heat shield. Not finished it yet, it's meant to encase the filter totally, I'm just playing around though at the moment with different ideas.

Oh, and dumpvalve and wastegate aren't the same thing. Wastegate is on the exhaust side and DV is on the inlet side. The wastegate allows exhaust gas to bypass the turbo and go straight through the exhaust. Markus, advantages of v/a valves over recircs are noise really, that's it. As for all this talk of overfuelling - CRAP, take no notice, it's miniscule.

If you are upping the boost, I'd fit a better DV, but you don't have to. Shop around and listen to the various ones before you buy.
Cheap end of the market - Forge just over £100, Blitz ones etc. times that by nearly 3.
