Default >4GB FIle --> NTFS USB Flash Drive --> Mac OS-X Problem

Im looking to use an 8GB USB flash drive to transfer >4GB files to a Mac running OS-X.4. I can only get it off the PC by formatting the flash drive using NTFS, but I can only get it onto the Mac by using FAT32: any suggestions?

I *thought* the only reason for having a PC-formatted media in FAT32 is that you can read/write to the same device.

If you're just transferring, you can format the device NTFS, an d drag it onto the Mac desktop.

Or have I missed the point (for a change! )

The other way is that if the machines are on the same network, why not just "map a network drive" on the PC (ie put the mac as a drive on your PC)
Then you can simply copy/paste....

Just a thought....

The Mac is standalone and OS-X cant read NTFS formatted drives. After a little more digging Ive found a freeware utility that allows OS-X to read NTFS volumes (all Id come across before was shareware that didnt work properly), so the problem appears to be solved. If anyone has an opinion on / experience about NTFS-3G, or an alternative, then Id be interested to hear.

That's interesting. I've always got this issue with students at the start of the year, when they buy external USB HDs.
They're ALWAYS formatted NTFS, of which the Macs at work can read the files quite happily.

They just wont write to them.

Out of interest. have you actually tried to read the files on the mac from the NTFS-formatted pen drive?

But looks like a good app though.

Yes but only with the one device. Since converting the drive it wont mount in OS-X, but it appears to be without fault in WinXP... I'll try with an old IDE disk over USB.

I've never heard of NTFS-3G, however, I have heard of MacFUSE which allows 10.4 and 10.5 to have read/write access to NTFS devices.

If I'm reading things correctly, the size of your individual files is >4GB in which case I think you will have a problem with just using the OS. I think MacFUSE may alleviate the problem.

Ive reformatted the drive and now OS-X will mount/read it, but every file appears to be 'damaged' according to the Mac.....
