Default Dealer offers 3rd gear upgrade

Just spoken to my local subaru dealer re a new 3rd gear gearset and synchro as it stripped due to what I believed to be too much power / ragging the **** off it. He mentioned that Subaru do a modified gearset for 3rd gear. He wasn't too forthcoming on what the mod is when pressed on the matter, but did say that the mod was in response to ongoing problems with 3rd gear shearing........???

so they fit the new gearset, which iirc will be a 3rd/4th cluster and then it fails again. But no doubt you'll be substantially lightened in the pocket department for the priviledge

Trouble is, i agree with you but I don't see an option it's either new gearset or secondhand but there doesn't seem to be anyone with a secondhand gearset. I'm fitting it meself so I doubt whether Subaru would honour any guarantee (must be something you did during the rebuild ,sir). If anyone could qualify this uprated gear option might put my mund at rest.

What TY is your gearbox - post MY03 5 speed boxes use wider/stronger gears and will fit into earlier phase 2 (TY754/755) boxes, it could be those they are offering.

Might be cheaper to source a TY754VN6AA box from a breaker assuming you currently have a 3.54 read diff.

I'll be sticking to my box as;

1 Iknow it's low mileage
2 I know the extent of the damage/wear

Whilst a secondhand box may be cheaper it is still an unknown quantity. If the later gears are the option being offered I'll make sure i take the old ones with me to compare with the new. Thanks for the advice by the way, I'll let you know how it pans out.

don't get to excited all the mod is is the washer that used to be behind third gear that used to get all chewed up is now built on to the gear itself, and you have to do 4th gear as well due to it also having to have a modified synchro hub as well.

On the other hand, I notice from other posts on here that it ain't a big deal to swap over to a 6 speed, what do you reckon?

No, this is referring to standard parts on a late TY754 box The PPG uses 752 type synchro cones.

Well, upon closer inspection we have a main casing thats cracked across one of the webs, sustained shrapnel damage internally, and when you run your finger over some of the other gears you can feel rather than see where the teeth have suffered. All in all this looks like a replacement box is gonna be better than welding up the case, replacing the damaged gears etc. A shame really as the diffs etc are all fine, but I don't trust the fragile nature of these boxes anymore. We're running 324 / 301 at the last dyno run and we've added a LARGE tmic with further mods in mind so I'm guessing a 6 speed box or maybe an auto like those aussie boys run but I'm guessing ecu (loss of map), wiring differences, pedalbox etc are not gonna be worth the effort.
A complete used 6 speed seems to be the answer but as I said previously it will be an unknown quantity until we strip it. I can't justify the £K price to fix a bloody small gearbox.

I've been offered a 5 speed STI 'box at a good price. Now the question is, what sort of power has been put RELIABLY through one of these boxes? I'm currently running 324/301 at the moment but have since fitted a big TMIC and am looking at fitting a boost guage with Dawes device with a view to another run on the dyno to tweak these mods.
As you may remember, my '01 WRX 'box let go of third in rather spectacular and destructive style internally (and externally if you count the shrapnel induced spider web crack right through the case). No supplier either trade or public can source uprated gears (eh?) so a complete box seems my best route.
Any thoughts?
