i have a 97 impreza turbo 82k miles with mild mods such as full decat etc

currently using Mobil Super S semi-synthetic 10w 40

which one shall i upgrade to as i am thinking of doing an oil chage fairly soon.

i heard motul 300v and mobil 1 motorsport maybe too thick for winter as they are 15w??

Silkolene Pro-s 10w 50?

millers 10w 60????

any advice appreciated. and whichever wins i will buy.

Stick with the semi synth stuff, bit late in life to start using fully synth tbh.

semi synthetic is boring and what people put in everyday cars, scooby do's heat up faster and run hotter lol

i went on the castrols website and they reckon castrol edge sport 10w 60 so thats what im going to buy, as its the top one which replaced castrol RS

Bob Rawle recommended Shell Helix Ultra 5/40 for my MY99. I have had no problems using it. As I am sure you know, he knows his stuff!

Any fully alloy engine will heat up quickly, your average road going car heats up quickly, an iron lumped car on the other hand takes somewhat longer to heat up because iron takes longer to warm up, its simple physics

BUT a car with 82k on the clock will have no benefits of fully synthetic oils because they are designed to prevent/reduce wear in the engine, the trouble is at 82k you already have that wear its meant to reduce/prevent hence its pointless putting fully synth in.

castrol magna tec 10/40 is what ive used in my motor witch is 13 years old and 55k since oil changes are every 4-5k no matter what oil you use will still never be knackered but its up to you if you wanna waste 50quid on needless expensive oil every few miles. In alot of cases just like in supermarkets put a different label on a bottle and you will belive its a different product. We live in a world of exploitation of consumable items.

 

Would it make it any difference using fully synth at that mileage though if you wanna put it in? just wondering cause I'm not sure what my 96 classic has had in it as I bought it at 86k and serviced it with Mobil S semi synth 10w40 but I prefer fully synth so I was gonna use Millers 10w60 for the next service (very nearly due)

 

I just bought my first scoob a few months ago, had 92k on it, no idea what was being used in it before, but i got a friend who's a fully certified mechanic and he tells me that changing the type of oil you use in your car really doesn't do anything bad to the car. I went ahead with mobil 1 5w20 for my scoob and it runs great except for some other problems I know are un-related. Fully synthetic oil doesn't burn though, which was a big plus for mine because I was burning oil before I changed it. There are myths about synthetic oil like it causes leaks and such, when really all it is doing is actually cleaning out the gunk left behind from your old oil that is probably already blocking cracks/holes in the system and revealing leaks that were already there.
