I would go for newer but I'm biased! why not look at 03 on? If you can get an sti go for it! You will regret it if you choose a wrx and for a little more you could have got an sti. People buy wrx's then mod them.

you wont need a rebuild as soon! Warranty left? Better interiors? Better brakes? More likely to be able to find a mint example? More choice? Each to their own obviously. The P1 was/Is a lovely car. I had 14k to spend about 4 months ago and could have had a superb P1 but opted for a newer model. Personal preference mate

Also depends how long you plan to keep it. You will lose less on a P1 over time than a similarly priced "common" newage. Widely recognised as the uk model most likely to achieve true "classic" status.

Yes i agree, but the 3 engine rebuilds inbetween will cost you what you saved and more

Granted...mines only a basic newage blobeye WRX but A) i love it, B) this site is superb so stay on here whatever you buy and C) try 'em out. The first reply is probably my favourite - buy a newie but get and sti coz I'm already modding mine however, I wanted to subtlety of a wrx rather than the 'obvious' sti. Don't get me wrong, love the sti, but personally like the 'quietness' of the subtle wrx.

I have been here long enough to know that the wink suggests a bit of exaggeration, but newbies may not realise that.

I would suggest that a properly mapped and looked after P1 will not need a rebuild more than once every say 60-70k miles?!

Go to P1 Web Owners Club :: Warning, may contain nuts!

Join up, then look at the poll regarding engine failures and peoples experiences. You can then make an informed decision as opposed to listening to uninformed idiots like Tony Burns

Dont let that put you off, you could fit a V5/6 Sti engine from a breakers for half that (& then keep your old block & rebuild it to your own spec)

If you're going to be doing 12-15K+ miles a year in it, then i'd say bug/blob STi

If it's more of a toy or your commute is short then i'd go for a late classic, an RB5 WR or a P1 or if you want something a bit more raw a Type R/RA ...& if you're keeping it standard a V-Ltd will be well within budget

But with any Impreza Id always keep a £1.5-2K rainy day fund, just in case

If it were me it would be a P1.

Sure it could cost a bit in maintenance etc. but so could a newer car. I had an 03 STI and in the last 12 months it cost me £5K for lovely things like a new rear diff, new suspension top mounts etc. etc.

The difference is at the end of the day a well maintained P1 will always be worth more than a well maintained cooking model newage STI or the likes.

Plus it is a nicer looking car in my opinion.

Yet still about 40% have had rebuilds due to engine failure, thats a pretty high rate in anyones books of course you can make your own mind up some are going strong at 100k, some blow up at 50k.

P1's are a hit and miss item, you either get one thats ok or you dont, you also have to add the cost of a remap if you want "security" on your engine, that will add to your insurance costs.

Oh and its not just maf failures that cause engine failures on these, considering that far more MY99/00 turbo's were sold than P1's, look at the failure ratio

Two class of impreza. STi, P1, R type,Type 25 and 22B all fine high performance cars..but with higher running costs. The 22B, Type 25 and P1 will hold their values better (22B will increase in value if you get a good one but not for 10,000 quid!).

Some of these are hard core cars and may be more than you need.

UK turbo, WRX are good high performance cars too, but not as quick off the line and with a softer set up and less toys to play with than the above cars. Some say they are better every day drives and cheaper to run.

So you have to think what you are going to be using the car for.......... weekend blasts track days and short trips or mega cross country jaunts.

If you want a long distance car go for the latter selection of cars.

If performance is the be all and end all of your requirements go for any car from the first selection of cars.
