Default Boost is all over the place please help!!!

I bought a 99T RB5 2 weeks ago.
The car is standard bar PPP and a VTA DV
When i hit boost it pulls to 3500 and then seems to die then it picks up again
at 5k and i usually change about 6k
I expected the boost to be strong and then gradually die off as the revs went up???
I am not sure if thats how it should be cos im new to the game
any advice welcome
I have a new MAF to fit is there any way of testing the original?

if your dump valve is ok, check wastegate lever on your turbo, to do this remove the 'c' clip on the lever and check that it is free. thanks matt

Would remove VTA and replace with correct re-circulating one if you do a search on here you will see lots of people have had probs with VTA .

not always the case, i've run one for 3 years with no issue.

sounds like its overboosting and hitting boost cut for some reason, might need an ecu reset, or checked for any sensor issue

How do i do an ECU reset?

I may add that it does not do it all the time depends how i accelerate.
If i accelerate slowly and bury the throttle about 4k revs it seems to do it and it always seems to do it in 5th but that may be something to do with changing into 5th before a certain speed :P
If i hammer it through the gears it is usually ok
