Personally I would buy a UK car, but each to their own, I have a very low Milage MY98, if your intrested, the car has been cherished by me for the last 7 years!!!!!!!!!!!!

6k budget.......

1. If you want a reliable car that you want to lightly modify, then go for a 02 plate WRX(bugeye) 217 bhp standard. Solid and well built although lardy.

2. If you want something to modify a little further and don't mind tinkering and messing under the bonnet, go for a UK MY99/00 model (£5k) and get it up to over 300 bhp with the remainder of the cash. Also 217 bhp standard but lighter than the bugeye.

3. A more risky move (imo) is to go for an import STI, although I doubt a type R for 6k. Risky because of the unknown history and past life but if you can get a good one then these are the 'cream of the crop' imo. These are around 280bhp standard.

good luck

If you go for a UK model for around the age range you can afford i'm sure your looking at less power than the import models. If your after performance, which I guess you are, go for more power as standard otherwise you'll be kicking yourself when it comes to having to splash out more to get the power you want and DESERVE

I think on sidc there is a section that tells you all the different models years power and weights etc.

UK car first. Live with it. Get used to it. Then later you'll be wised up if you really want more and can go out and get an import with some confidence you know what you're looking for.

Aside .... The Type R (ie, 2-door) has shorter ratio gears. Great for a blast, Not so good on the motorways. Personally, I have a 4 door and never regretted it.

You may get a 2 door (Type R) for 6k, but it will not be the best example. Unless you really want a 2 door I'd go for a 4 door as they are generally cheaper - less exclusive(?). The Type R is quite hardcore; close ratio 'box, no abs, harsh ride, niosy, but that all said and done they are great fun.
How about a classic sti? They're nearly the same as a Type R to drive, but have longer ratio's and abs, 6k should get you something quite nice.

A V3 or V4 STI is what id spend 6k on....there are some bargains to be had at present due to the low prices.
