Hi, don't generally venture into general but I had a mate of mine on the phone last night about buying a Scoob.

So, he is after some advice, I extolled the benefits of SN and told him to register, so whilst he gets sorted I thought I would get the ball rolling to see what the general consensus is.

He has been after a WR1, prices seem to be around the 15k mark, are these affected by the current motoring climate the same as other Scoobs or do they sell quicker, I basically said its a buyers market for Scoobs at the moment and a standard factory special like a WR1 is the way to go.

Alternatively he knows of a modified STI8, with a claimed 420 bhp, 2003 and the owner is looking for 13k or therabouts, so more power for less money, I advised he to proceed carefully and find out fully whats been done and by whom, is 420 bhp a fairly reasonable figure to run for any length of time, do they put up with it, what to watch for ? this will be his only car and used for a fairly long commute.


Also, he is still fairly youthful, at about 26 I think so what are the best insurance options ?

Finally does anyone want a 300 bhp Astra 888 Coupe for about 8 grand ?

 

There's plenty of WR1 vs STi8 threads, i'd have a read of them.

Personally, i'd opt for the STi8. You get better performance, for less money, and your car is not baby blue.

As for the STi8; i'd try and find out what has been done. The clutch will need replacing if standard and the internals are questionable, although there's quite a few running 420-460 at the minute, albeit on funny-fuel.

Check what turbo it is. It might be a PITA to drive daily, ie. not boosting until much further up the range.

Price on the STi8 sounds about right, if it has all the supporting mods. Got a link/on PH?

Personally I would go for the WR1 but then I am biased as I owned one from new....

A standard WR1 would also be better for insurance purposes as it had the (unique) PPP, the (unique) Prodrive suspension etc.,.. and the DCCD all as part of the manufacturers specification so is classed as un-modified and is therefore cheaper to insure than an equivalent STi with PPP etc added.

That is true and may be a factor for your mate @ 26.

Plus they hold their value better.

But if neither of those are an issue, then still for the STi8.

Good post and another funny fuel owner here albeit running a rather more 'modest' 420bhp

Funny fuel allows you to get more power safely and using a smaller turbo. The MD321H (that I use) gives great spool and is just as driveable if not more so then the standard car, not least because there's such a wide powerband. Having said all that, pushing out more than 400bhp on factory internals is going to put everything under a bit more stress, although these engines (when mapped properly) are tougher than many people give them credit for!

 

MIne is for sale, STi8 with the same suspension mods as a WR1, more power but significantly less money.
