Im soon moving jobs and as a result will be able to upgrade from my Saxo VTS. The car Ive always wanted is a scooby and I'm wondering what sort of car I would get for about £10000-11000 (can you get a good one for this money?) and whether to look at uk spec or import? Any suggestions appreciated.

that will get you a MY97-98 Turbo (private sale) i would have thought.....a big jump from a VTS saxo
not sure about WRX prices just have a lookin the ForSale section will give you an idea.

Of course you should buy one In fact, you should buy two. I don't see how you can have more fun on the road for the money.

Anyhow, I've just bought a MY99 (uk turbo) with 54k on the clock and fsh for 9,900 so look around. You'll be able to find something easily within that price range.

yeah it is a big jump but until now that is all i have been able to afford!!! (good track day car tho and lots of fun) I now need something to keep up with my mates Boxter S!!! And the reason i ask a bunch of Subaru nuts is cos you are the people who will be able to give me some decent suggestions!!! (if a little biased!!)

IMHO UK or Grey, but if you are not a gambling man best stay with UK car.

Thanks Moles dad. Is there a big difference in power from uk spec to grey? And do you suffer at dealers with servicing etc if you go grey import?

 

Power wise you tend to win there with the import. Insurance wise you get stung rather badly, you also need to run them on SUL and always best to add booster.

I love my MY94 WRX

If I were you and on past experience, if you want less running costs and lower insurance go for a UK.
If you do go for an import, take into account that you will need an extra grand or so for insurance!!!!

I jumped from a Puma to a scoob. As long as you respect the power and learn to drive it over a period of time rather than rushing into it, you will never be able to take that grin off your face.

Subaru main dealers wont touch grey imports.

There are plenty of independent garages that will though.

If you buy a U.K car they generally aren't as fast but there are plenty of mods you can do to make them alot quicker than standard. Just look through the Drivetrain forum.

I should be able to drive it reasonably well!!! I am a class 1 police driver so have in theory a little ability! But obviously will treat it with respect till i get used to it!!!

A big jump not really - like most cars until you get stupidly fast cars their shouldn't be a prob. You'll get used to the power quite quickly. A VTS is nippy anyway! It doesnt matter what car you buy it could always do with being faster! Robertio did the jump from a VTR with no probs!

 

Well the class 1 ive done is a bit different to the advanced course that public can do, but it can lower your insurance anyway with certain companies. If you want I'll find some companies that do it and post em tomorrow.

Just out of curiosity you have to get an insurance quote for an Sti (you could get a nice sti3 or scrappy Sti4 for 11k) - you may be surprised seeing as you are a professional driver. Also, you would have to modify a UK car a great deal to match Sti performance, and I'd wager your insurance would then be worse than a standard Sti. Shop around... Why give it a go? 280bhp and 26olbs ft vs 215 bhp and 215 lbs ft? No competition, and that's just for starters........

Sorry Uk guys, you have lovely cars, and yes there are many reasons not to buy an import, but buy wisely and you get a very different car for your money.... Horses for courses.

Danbo the best thing you can do is to go out and have few test drives on various types of models.You can buy a decent bit of kit for £11000 but remember (Get an hpi report before buying)

 

Danbo, I moved from a Saxo VTS about 6 months ago. Saxo was and is still a quick car. You will need to drive the Scoob at higher speeds to get the same on the edge thrill. Trouble is, if you then loose it.. big money. There's nothing like the mid range punch of a turbo car in my book.
