There's been a couple of threads on this in the last week or two.

With both this and my last car I never got stopped, my last car had a small custom plate, on the scooby I've got a 3/4 size plate

Not in my experience, one plod even got me the day after. He said he didn't have time to turn around to stop me so he was chuffed to bits when he spotted me next day.

arn't you lucky. Son had one on the front of his scooby got pulled on motorway coming back from sheffield tax office fortunately he'd got his tax by then but officer told him he was after the manufacturer rather than people displaying them. But if he saw it again he'd ticket him.

Either act dumb, as said 'it was on car when I bought it..' (although they may question when last MOT was..!

Or better IMHO, claim some ****** must of nicked your proper one in the night and you thought the 'show plate' you had in the garage would be better than nothing until you're able to get a proper one made (delayed due to misplacing V5..? )..

Worth a try..!

FWIW I've had a <3/4 plate (smaller characters) on for over 3yrs and not been bothered yet, fingers crossed..! I think if the local 5o see you often enough and know you're no bother then they'll turn a blind eye, if they've even noticed that is.. It's when you come across 'foreign' traffic that you 'may' have a problem..!

What's the point?

The car will already attract unwanted attention.

Why not have a proper sized number plate?

If you do, you won't get pulled by the Police and then you won't come on here moaning that you've had to pay a fine.

True, as long as the lettering is the correct size they cant touch you for the size of the plate

I think you may be slightly wrong on that....the size of the lettering is important, hence that denotes the size of the plate, borders etc.
If you order a 3/4 size plate like I did, the lettering will be scaled down, but the best way to remain slightly legal is to get the spacing and Font correct.

I did mine because of the FMIC, the rear is completely 100% legal.
You take your chances

I've got a standard number plate but its cut down around the outside, still leaving a border of white around the lettering approx 10mm. Thus keeping the standard font, standard size lettering but doing away with the unneeded part. As with Tony, this is because i run a front mount intercooler and the rear plate is standard...well almost.
