Default Opinions on Sti prodrives lads...

Ive been umming and ahhing about a newer Scoob, Ive got a WRX bug atm but im try to justify spending nigh on a grand to get it upto 270-80BHP (full exhaust and re-map) when in reality I could probably pick up a sti pro-drive bugeye for a few grand more (8,9,10k)

Which would obviously have more features and better than standard parts, eg, brembo brakes etc.

Can anyone explain a few things for me please?

Like what I should be looking for on them, im assuming theres a few ppl out there who advertise them as being sti prodrives but obviously arn't etc.

And what difference in power are they to the WRX, Ive seen some quoted as doing 0-60 in 4.5sec...is this true?

And lastly...ive mumbled on enough, what options are there to increase the power, how easy is it, costs etc, Im assuming they run around 305BHP from what Ive seen?

There a 2 types of STI Prodrives that are often confused.
STI PPP which has the Prodrive performance pack taking it from 265 to 305 bhp.
Then there is a Prodrive style that has cosmetic differences including different front bumper, large rear wing and side mouldings (may be other bits also) and not necessarily the performance pack. Standard bhp = 265.

I was in the same position to yourself 2 years ago and I ended up getting the STI which I think was definitely the correct decision.
The STI is far better than the WRX in everyway and a better platform for modifying.

As for modifying......an exhaust system, sports cat, uprated fuel pump and remap should see up to 340 bhp. It all cost me around £1200.

I believe the 0-60 on the STI PPP is 4.5.

I will echo Bob and Azz's comments.

STi PPP will not do a 4.6 0-60 under normal driving conditions, more like low 5s (and I have one before you ask ). I believe Mike Wood at Prodrive can do it, but it is not a real-world figure. Focus instead on the all round driving experience - great brakes, better suspension, diffs etc etc.

good luck

A 2005 STi PPP was my first Subaru, I love it

I would always take a standard STi over a modifed WRX, as already said, better starting block and come resale worth more.

Nice car mate

Btw, just done a quick check on a sti ppp (305bhp) car Ive seen for an idea of insurance and the car that comes up with the no' plate I supplied is a WRX UK300, now am I right in thinking thats not an sti ppp or what.....not much experience with these things tbh, are they also known as a WRX UK300???

Not sure, because the quote has actually come in nearly £300 cheaper than what i paid with A-plan last yr for my bog standard WRX

I'm insured with Elephant and there were 2 choices for the STi, the 265bhp model and the 301bhp (305ps) model.

Uk 300 is a limited edition WRX, certainly not an STI.

Try another insurance site, as not all of them require a reg, some you can just select the model of car you want to get a quote on.

Be careful Jimmy, insurers can easily get mixed up on the model. This could leave you with effectively no cover; it happened to me with Direct Line, though did sort it out eventually.

You can tell a UK300 from an STi visually, providing both are stanard styling. Post a link if you need to, someone here will tell you what it is.

Cool knocking struts

no one has mentioned about the struts on the sti,if you decide to go for an sti,(great car,i have an 03 sti, ppp)make sure the struts arn't shot!!! i had all 4 replaced under warranty but they all went again within 2yrs,so put on an after market set up,which with fitting was around £1200.
you need to go for a long test drive,no radio on,and do some big circles and listen for knocking both front and rear!!

Even with my limited knowledge of Subaru's I know visually they have different rear spoilers and different brakes.

Yeah, I know it was a cat d but IMO too many ppl are quick to shun them before looking at them, if the work thats been carried out is decent and he has any receipts etc of where it was done etc, then id still consider it.

Ive weighed up all the pro's and con's of a cat d but would still like to take a look tbh.

Has anyone had any experiences of looking at a cat d? I mean, obviously the back end took a knock apparently, obviously I can't guage how it is b4 looking at it, but its a 120 mile trip to where it is so Im looking for a few pointers for if I go to look at it.

You say you've seen it elsewhere mate, where was that, advertised or actually seen the car?

That's certainly not a UK300...................unless it's had new front end, full re-spray (300s are blue only), new rear spoiler and new rear lights among other things.

good luck whatever you go for mate

cat d or not cat d.......tis the question.........your choice

lol...well I will say, I like the look of the car ALOT, its the colour I want AND the spec, but I have a habit of talking myself out of it, the cat d is always there on my mind, but the chance to get a newer model than the bugeye my budget can stretch to is so appealing.

I suppose ill never know unti I go view it?
