Hi All,

Had a set of redline inovits fitted with Falken 452 tyres. Currently running 32/31 on pressures.

When I get to about 80mph I can feel a vibration through the steering wheel and it goes through the car a little (not a lot)

Had Geo done and all is fine, is this just an inbalanced wheel problem by the sounds of it??

 

Move the wheels front to back, and see what happens.

 

Incorrect wheel balance makes an amazing amount of difference to steering wheel vibration. I had it bad at 65mph, then got wheels balanced when I bought new tyres and the vibration disappeared immediately. It doesn't cost much, so always worth getting checked.

 

the wheels need to be balanced mate by the sounds of it . specially as u just had new wheels fitted . they probably were not balanced properly

 

Hmm - they were balanced and weighted but I wouldnt put it past the garage to have done them wrong. They let me drive out with 39PSI on the left and 32PSI on the right. Made for an interesting drive back fighting with the car until I got to the Shell Garage

 

Has the Mrs left anything in the glove box?

 

I'd agree on them not being balanced. I've had this before from a company who promised they had done it, I went straight back and made them do it again, it was ok then

 

get em re balanced mate . id do it for u as i own a tyre shop but you are prob miles away lol

 

first vibration from unbalanced wheels (or dirt on the wheels) starts at about 70 mph, once you past that another vibration will be at around 130 mph, so either get them balanced or try to speed up past the second vibration point.

 

be honest if you have the falkens on all 4 corners it could be them!
I had them fitted just on the fron and they were fine but when I put them on all 4 corners I got the same as you, all balanced correct tyre pressure and geo has been done
Gonna go back to Goodyears me thinks.

 

I had new tyres fitted and wheels ballanced at same time.. Had a vibration. I went back to the same tyre place a week later to have a complai and they checked the fron twheels and found one was a little out, fixed it for free.. Top garage

 

even if they are slightly out . they will cause a vibration .

Yep. Between that and the camber of the road.

Getting the balancing checked again tomorrow so will see what happens from there.

 

Precise balancing of wheels is not always easy and all wheel balancers are not created equal. Problems can and do arise when the wheel rim itself is not 100% in true; sometimes the centre holes for mounting on the hub are not absolutely centred when compared to the mounting holes for the wheel bolts. I have lightweight Rota rims and there are only two places in the North of England I know of that can get new tyres on them balanced really accurately - ie no wheel vibration discernible even at warp factor speed!

 

Had exactly the same thing after getting a new set of F1's for the front.

Took car elsewhere and had wheels balanced - problem solved.

 

Right... all sorted now.

Put the tyre pressures in stated on the door insert (2.3b front and 1.9b rear), immediate grip again and good turn in. No airey feel on the car anymore.

Had the wheels rebalanced and guess what... they were all out!!

I know what garage/wheel supplier I wont be using again.

Its like a different car now

 

Sorry to hijack McWRX's thread but . . .

I've got exactly the same problem on my 03 STI. I've just had the wheels balanced and the alignment checked and I'm still experiencing the same shake at over 60 mph. You can really feel it through the steering wheel and the pedals. The keys on my keyring make a very annoying rattling sound too. Apart from that the car is superb.

Does anyone know what else might have this effect ? I've still got a warranty for the next month so I need to get it sorted.

Any pointers would be great !

TBH mate when you feel it throughout the whole car, 99/100 times it's as above, ie wheel balance out. May only be one wheel slightly out, but it happens..

Apparently, most balance machines have two levels of accuracy and quite a lot of places use the lesser accurate mode. For most cars it's sufficient and is quicker at the end of the day= more £££ for fitter..

 

Is it worth taking it back and get them to have another look at the balancing then ?

If it wasn't the balancing, what else might it be, or is this sympton always related to balancing ?
