Im absolutley fed up with brake dust on my front wheels.I expect to have to clean them but some brake dust gets "Impregnated" in to the paint leaving them peppered with black dots even after cleaning
Is there any way to stop this "peppering" apart from not driving

 

i use some muir polish on mine after cleaning,it does not stop the dust but makes it a lot easier to remove.
apart from not braking i dont think there is any way of stopping the dust

 

will depend heavily on what brake compound you use....
for example DS3000's have ruined my wheels...

 

Thats what I thought I was just hoping of some sort of "miracle" spray that cold form a barrier to stop it.I'll have to keep looking coz I can't afford to keep spraying my wheels

 

I use alubright on my wheels , it is an alluminium acid , it must be a mild one as it hasn't damaged the paint on my wheels , and I have been using it for a couple of years , if you get it on bare alloy it wil start frothing up !
I used ot to clean all the alluminium parts on my rally car engine , the head and cam carriers ect and it did a very good job.
It costs about £10 a gallon , I just put some in a tub and brush it on using the brush to loosen the crap off.
I take my wheels off once a month to do the backs of them ( my wife says I'm a dick ! ) so nothing is on long enough to ingrane on them anyway.

I do this too but make out i'm "checking stuff" so I don't get any abuse

Actually, the peppering that is ingrained in the paint is mainly hot metal particles from the brake disc. These in effect melt into the paint/laquer on the wheels.

Unfortunately that's life. You can try and find a brake compound that is softer and less agressive; but the down side of that is they leave a load of normal brake dust instead (i.e the powder that easily cleans off).

I have experinced pads that claim to be "low dust" and "disk friendly" which, they were. BUT dispite their claimes of "good bite from cold" was utter rubbish, they perfomed poorly in all conditions. despite them being a "fast road" pad. For that, don't trust EBC's slick advertising

I have fitted wheel protectors before on a BMW, which worked a treat, but this car was used for communting, not fast road. Plus the wheels had quite a close spoke pattern, so you couldn't see them. Fitted on a car with wheels that have a very open spoke design probably would look odd.

If metal imprenation is really bad, I have used a very fine scotchbrite pad and lots of T-cut to act as a lubricant to remove it (with minimal pressure). It's not something you want to do more than once a year (otherwise you won't have any laquer left) and the wheels will need polishing and waxing after. All in all, it takes about half an hour per wheel (cut, polish, wax). But they look superb afterwards.

 

I like to keep my wheels clean inside as well as out, but dont have to take them off to clean them. Plus I do keep the arches clean too, a slve to the sponge i'm afraid.

I also put a spot of polish the Ap calipers, they cost enough so why not look after stuff.


Though when someone passes comment on how clean the car is, it makes it all worthwhile....

 

the DS2500`s arent much better either, a complete c**t to clean the dust off of them after a good run or a trackday , i use wonderwheels to clean them but it usually takes at least two applications with the brush (give it a once over with the brush and leave it to work in) then go back 20 mins or so later and do it again not exactly quick going TBH, so would be intrested to see what stops this too

 

I've got some of that, it works well. The wheels are very easy to clean once its been applied, the also look very shiney

 

will definatley give some of this stuff a go if its as good as it says on the tin then

 

Get some Poorboys Wheel Sealant, this will sort it out, brake dust glides off after using this correctly.

Another vote for Poorboys wheel sealant

I'm using EBC Red stuff ceramic and EBC discs... dust just comes off with your finger after applying the Poorboys stuff... weekly wash with shampoo and your wheels are gleaming!

 

Where can you get this poorboys wheel sealent from?
