as with quite a few people on this forum, im not to clever with oils. i was told to put 5w30 in my car by somebody, im about to do an oil change and need to buy some more oil any way. is this the right oil to be using? i have also got fully synthetic in there, is this right?

Having spoken to Subaru technical on the subject, they tell me that is their recomendation!!

It's not an oil that we ever use, not even on a std road car, but that doesn't change the official recomendation does it.

Guys, I have the manual for the MY99 (even the original sales brouchure) and it doesn't say a specific oil, it gives a temperature chart and the range of viscosities appropriate for temp ranges. 5w 30 would seem most appropriate for very cold environments. The manual does say that 5W 30 Is NOT suitable for sustaned high speed driving. a 10w 30 or 10w 40 appear to be the grades most suitable for the chart presented given the UKs typical temp range. It then goes on to say that a 10/50 should be used for demanding conditions, in high temps etc...

I wouldn't use a 5w 30 oil on my Classic.

5w30 is for newage cars.

 

If it's not modified 10w40 fully synth, if modified 10w 50 the make of oil you use is up to you.
Oilman sells a good range, as does ASperformance and many others.
Been running MY99 on 10w50 for many years without problems.
