Could you fit one as a straight swap for the standard turbo,uk spec 1998,with no engine mods?

I fitted one to my my99 and it's pushing out 350bhp with supprting mods so good bang per buck turbo in my view.

can i ask what supporting mods you have got fitted as i am in the middle of uping the pwoer on my99 uk turbo and the next step is a turbo and i was thinking of a vf34/35 but a vf28 has come up! currently got fmic, spaced manifold, uprated up-pipe, equal lenght headers, full 3'' decat system, 550 injectors, hks induction kit, fpr, walbro fuel pump, uprated plugs(think thats it)

would the vf28 make less power then the vf34/35

usually the VF28 will produce less power than the VF34/35, yes. 350 is an exceptional result on this turbo; I'm wondering if an optimistic RR might account for it. Low 300s much more common.

VF35 spools quickest out of the lot and usually produces around 330ish.
VF34 Usually develops most power out of the lot circa 340ish.

All assuming appropriate mods.

VF35 can usually be had significantly cheaper than VF34, but not as cheap as VF28.

I went for the VF35 and am very happy with it. Ony downsides are a) it's a noisy little bugger ( I like that) b) It can be prone to surge, but appropriate supporting mods and good mapping prevents that

agree that 350 sounds a tad high for a VF28.

Chuffs its little heart out! Basically you can hear the rush of air as the turbo spools up! If you like induction noise you'll love it!

thought thats what u meant, even my little td04 started chuffing a bit when i fitted the decat downpipe, sounds quite good though i think, seems to dump through my airbox too as i have the resonator removed, standard dumpvalve though which i will be keeping.

Nothing out of the ordinary - decat, uprated fuel pump, panel filter, uprated plugs, 3-port boost solenoid, tubular headers and up-pipe, spaced manifold, forge re-circ dump-valve, uprated turbo-inlet hose and vf28 of course. I was pleasantly surprised with result as was expecting maybe 330-340 but got 351/353 and this was on Deltadash figures on road not an optimistic rolling-road. Bob Rawle who did all the mapping said i must have a good one as he was a bit surprised too. Think the turbo is very much maxed out at this level though. Interestingly the injectors (440cc) weren't maxed out at this level(92% peak duty from memory i think).

My Type RA does that, probably due to having virtually no sound proofing, you can hear the VF28 spooling up and chattering as boost builds then turns into an induction howl which eventually gets drowned out by the deafening roar from the Blitz

Are you sure it's a 28!!!

Even with Bob's magic, that's a great result, and - as you pointed out- the DD isn't usually far off!

I've a VF28 on my My99 with standard injectors(440's) and standard fuel pump, With a full decat, K&N induction kit, Hybrid FMIC with a Ecutek remap and I got 317 BHP on powerstation rollers on a hot day with a very dirty induction kit (now changed to a new one).

Spool up is really quick, I get 1 bar just before 3000RPM and 1.3 by 3600 RPM. With the UK gearing it makes for a very quick car (able to stay in each gear for longer). There was nothing in it when playing with a friends type R of the same power, We tried a few test and it was pretty much a dead heat, standing start and a rolling start.

The Uk car should of came with one of these as standard!!!!

My current car had a VF28 as standard and spooled well and I would guess it was a genuine 320 bhp turbo. Some turbos do more than others for no apparent reason but anything more than 320 from a VF28 and I would be happy with the bonus Supporting mods will count for a lot.
Just like variation in turbos there is a lot of variation in rolling roads and when it comes to delta dash the results rely heavily on the operator input information so these debates are often fujtile. Fr a start if the operator is dishonest and there are a few about they can tell you the car is doing 350 bhp when it is only 320bhp
I know a VF28 is a great upgrade for a TD04 equipped car.
The VF23 is also a good turbo I think and from my experience it has a little bit more than the VF28.

well havfing a vf28 fitted by the guys at subaru4you on monday then off to see bob on the saturday so will be interesting to see how it gets on. only upgrading as i have a big fueling problem i am gettign a load of petrol in my oil, think its called piston wash or something. so due to neededing a remap thought i might as well see some power gians and up the turbo to make it even more worth while.

should hope to see a comfortable road car nothing wild just a capable car, as it was only intended to be a stop gap as i could not stand driving around in the vectra gsi for much longer after chopping the p1 in.

crossed fingers lol

Think its called borewash mate!
What boost are you going to be running with your VF28? I have a VF24, and(with supporting mods)makes around the 300 bhp mark at 1.3 bar. If the VF28 can make higher boost and still stay safe I might have to upgrade

I would not look on a VF28 as a leg up from a VF 24 and certainly not sufficient to warrant the effort and expense. AVF34/35 or TD05 18G may be a reasonable upgrade but all these turbos would benefit from 550 cc injectors.
