hi everyone, i ve tried changing my timing belt on my 1994 jdm classic today but i was unsure so i left it to complete 2morow. i found some issues when fitting the new belt on..
1st)
left hand side cams : are they supposed to be on a tension or freeplay...
i think its freeplay so i ve align all the timing marks and bolted everything but when i turned the engine by hand couple of times, the timing marks doesnt come back on the same place after four strokes????
is that right?

any advice would be much appreciated!!!

If you are looking at the engine from the front of the car,
the left hand cams(cylinders 1+3) will be off the "cam"(loose) when the belt is off. The right hand cams are rotated "on cam"(tight) with the belt off to get the marks aligned with the marks on the belt.
You have removed the Tensioner pin before rotating by hand??

Thanks mick for the reply , yeah i did remove the pin from from the tensioner... after reading the post you put above ( really helpful), i wanted to know that when rotating the engine couple of times , will the timing marks comes in the same place after four strokes but finally someone said in that post it goes back on the same place about 60 turn !!!!!! lol !!! so i think everything is fine, and i ll start the engine up 2morow and see!!

No probs san007t, can be a bit confusing the first time you do it.
The physical timing marks on the pulleys,inner belt covers and crank belt pulley will line up every 2nd full revolution - the white marks on the timing belt will line up eventually if you have a spare hour/strong arms to keep winding it over by hand !!!!
At least you have done it yourself and saved a small fortune.
