Just after some advice as to where i can go from here.

Bought my MY97 turbo in September 2000 (52,500mls on the clock) only to find out a month later that it's had a new short block fitted under warranty because of piston slap (@52,000mls). Fair enough i thought, one less thing to worry about.

Two months ago i noticed that dredded slapping/knocking noise again.

Booked the car in for a service, and dropped it off last night.

Phone call @ 3pm today saying, 'yes sir, your car has piston slap'

The car is 4 months out of extended warranty granted, but the engine has only done 18,000 miles. They have requested a replacement piston from Subaru but it doesn't look that good.

Bearing in mind the low mileage and piston slap being a manufacturers defect (undersized piston) do i have a valid case????

so all the reassurance i'm getting about my car being fine afterwards - could funnily enough - be absolute BOLLO.CKS then.......thats just great that is.....

Fitting a new short block was the early solution to the problem, however, as the new unit was exactly the same spec as the old one it is just as likely to suffer the problem.

I believe the later oversized piston solution is more permanent.

Yours should be ok once you have had the 'modified piston' (basically a slightly oversized piston) as this is a more permanent fix.

That's exactly my line of thinking, therefore i should have a strong case to get it fixed under warranty.

Does this mean that IM could be interested in replacing piston for all Low mileage Impreza's (MY97@42500 miles) or what?

Did the dealer do the chasing or did you? let me know because if they will pay for it and not me then the world is a better place.

I would be interested in this aswell, surely they know it is a fault that owners should not have to pay for.

I did quite a bit of chasing myself, and because of the fact that the engine is only 18 months old (17,000mls) - replaced due to piston slap 18 months ago, and the fact that it's a manufacturing fault, they checked service history etc, and agreed to carrying out the work.

I think i may have been lucky here, but if i believe something is wrong i tend not to give up.

It's worth a try, have a chat with your dealer and see what they have to say.
