Default Car problems !!!!!

Hi just got myself my first subaru for my xmas, its only 1.6 because am only 18 and cant get insured on a turbo lol. anyway i had the car for less than 24 hours and the engine cut out . I tried to start her back up but it wasnt for happning. The next day i managed to get a mechanic to have a look at it and found that the timing was out by a mile. he said that the belt has slipped and knocked the engine out of time and bent the valves, is this a common problem???? and what can i do to prevnt this from happning again?????

sorry to hear about that m8, sounds nasty. cant see how a timing belt can slip unless something failed like the belt tensioner. not common as far as i know if regular timing belt service intervals are followed. maybe the previous owner didnt do this?

Are you getting it repaired?

How old is the car and how many miles? Cam belts can and do fail over time and need to be replaced at specified intervals or if the belt has been contaminated with oil. A cam belt failure is not a common problem for Subaru, or any other mfg TBH, but they do need to be replaced when stated in the service schedule, I have not heard of a tensioner failing but it is possible on high milers with poor servicing. Sadly, if the belt has failed then, at the very least, you will likely need a "top end" rebuild.

Steve, it's a STI4 splitter, or a copy. You can get them from several aftermarket fibreglass manufacturers. I'm sure that someone can point you in the right direction. Or try Ebay.

hi av just bought a newer engine today so should be back on the road shortly lol, the previous engine had bout 120000 on the clock so the milage was quite high, and i have also just bought a timing belt kit including pullies and tensioners to ensure it doesnt happen again lol, as for the front splitter am not sure where its from it was already on the car before i bought it, try ebay they seem to have a good selection.

I've got no idea but start a new thread and you might get some helpful answers You aren't likely to get answers jumping in on someone elses thread
