Unhappy Royal Marsden Hospital on fire!

Serious serious blaze by the looks of it!

2 operations in progress (medical)
40 fire fighters and 10 ambulances so far there.

Whole top floor looks destroyed and still not under control.

Its proper messy, all patients being evacuated into the car park, matresses being laid out to comfort the patients until they can be transferred.

Got to worry about the people in surgery right now.
But watching the live pictures its raging! Brave old firemen on the roofs with their hoses (hat off to them)

15 tenders, 4 ladder units, and 75 fire fighters.

Its on the news now. The top of the building has totally gone!

They're saying that the 2 people are still in surgery.

I guess I'll have to find another way home tonight - I usually use the bus stop right outside it

The local lads just shot off, so wonder if they are being relocated to cover another station.... Usual sorta thing.

Fingers crossed no research materials are lost. They say they have back ups, so hope they have.
Guttin watching the fire catching again where there are currently no fire fighters.
Gonna be some serious flood damage too!

Part of the roof has just really flared up!

Fingers crossed it wont spread to too much below.

Construction work was being carried out on the building work, and "could" be to blame they say.

There is a terrified MD of a contract company somewhere.

All the roads around the hospital have been closed.

The roof of the tower has caught on fire now.

Glad im not at work today. The area is bad on the best of days, but its gonna be a nightmare. Glad im not the one controlling the couriers round there today!

Smoke coming from lower and lower points in the building now, so could be getting bad.

Research department/building NOT affected

Yeah been following it on Sky News too, skycopter pics look baaaaaaad!

Police copter on the scene too. Whole hospital now being evacuated. Feel for the poor sods standing and laying in the ambulance area awaiting relocation.

The wind really aint helping

Firemen on every roof you can see. Heartbreaking to watch something like this burn.

Fire starting to show its face through a part of previously unaffected piece of roofing now. So the whole thing beneath is probably on fire

Whole place now evacuated, which is good news.

They are saying (as expected) that the whole place will be un-usable for a considerable amount of time.

Water damage suggested to be severe.

Imagine the irony on being rescued, albeit slightly burnt, from a local house fire... only to then be admitted to the bleedin Marsden

Would be ironic, as its a cancer hospital

Skycopter looks like its gone for fuel BEEB one still there. Other roof really starting to take hold now. Tiles popping off with the heat and the fire shows through.

Glad everyones out safely.
Lets just hope we don't lose any fire fighters who are putting their lives on the line by standing on those roofs trying to put it out.

2nd that. Not good conditions there.
All the equipment in there could also be damaged, very important scanners etc.

Scanners were shut down and would be ok as long as the chillers kept running. I would suspect they were turned off though, so the nitrogen would boil and they'd quench anyway. That roof space is the plant room.

The Sutton site will pick up a lot of the work, though they don't have an ICU any more.

Marsden used to be my second home when I managed a clinical trial there. I bet you that there are quite a few Pharmaceutical companies hoping that there trial data wasn't in there!
